On the way home now from a great couple of days in Malmö, Sweden, on an Erasmus+ staff training mobility at UNIC partner Malmö University. University College Cork collaborates with Malmö across a range of areas, especially in Sustainability, Arts and Culture, and City Engagement. The visit allowed us to share knowledge, get to know each university and city better, and identify best practices for continued partnership. Thank you so much Maria Pihel and Anna Beran for hosting. Great also to meet Selina Voss, Joel Veborg, Sara Bjärstorp, Peter Scholten, Per Linde, Madeleine Persson fd.Hulting and many more. Thank you Clare Murphy for facilitating the visit. The cultural sector holds a unique position in society, bridging communities and fostering understanding of global issues. Institutions such as museums, operas, theatres, cultural centres, concert halls, and fairs are increasingly recognized for their potential role in promoting sustainable development. Frequently, they elevate public discourse making complex scientific concepts accessible and relatable. 🏛️ 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀: While many cultural institutions pursue environmental certifications and play a crucial role in education and raising awareness, very few measure and assess their environmental impacts. They often lack long-term strategies to reduce their environmental footprint, and few present science-based evidences of their environmental performance, which is crucial for demonstrating genuine commitment and progress. 🔍 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵: 1. 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝗧𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: Cultural institutions must move beyond short-term measures and develop comprehensive, long-term strategies for sustainability. This includes reducing environmental footprints, minimizing waste, and optimizing resource use. 2. 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲-𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗘𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: Institutions should adopt science-based targets to transparently track and report their environmental performance, ensuring accountability and highlighting areas for improvement. 3. 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝘆 𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲: As trusted knowledge sources, cultural institutions have a responsibility to lead by example. Aligning their operations with the EU Green Deal goals can set a standard for sustainability and demonstrate commitment to a greener future. This alignment not only enhances their credibility but also strengthens their role as educators and advocates for climate action. 🌱 Cultural institutions are not just repositories of the past and educators of the present, but also active participants in building a sustainable future. By promoting critical thinking, emotional engagement, and public participation, they help create a more informed and proactive citizenry committed to sustainability. However, they should lead by example, integrating science-based environmental strategies and taking concrete actions to reduce their own environmental impact, thereby setting a powerful example for the public they educate. #CulturalSector #ClimateChange #Sustainability #EUGreenDeal #ScienceBasedTargets #LeadByExample #GreenFuture #Museums #mossgreen #DrivingPositiveChange

Did you know ? 💡 The 16th Eduniversal Convention’s theme is « Linked to Impact » What does it exactly stand for ? Linked to Impact echoes to the very aim of the World Convention which is : ➡️to gather the professionals of the Higher Education system from all over the world to create bounds and new academic partnerships ; ➡️to create a melting pot where Higher Education professionals can exchange ideas and reflect on the hottest topics (such as sustainability, climate change etc) that the sector faces. This year logo also illustrates the theme Linked to Impact. The logo is highly inspired by the traditional drawings and shapes from the Fijian KASO, which convey the idea of unity. Each color (green, orange, pink, purple and blue) represents the zones of the Eduniversal system. It really highlights the idea of reuniting people from all over the world in the blue zone that is Oceania. Thus during this year’s convention, you will explore, through conferences & workshops, four main themes shaping the future of business education : THEME 1 : Challenges for Business Schools THEME 2 : Collaboration & Transmission THEME 3 : Culture and Values THEME 4 : Change & Climate Change These themes will be explored through case studies in major sectors such as healthcare, energy, agrifood, tourism... “Linked to Impact” really embodies the mission of the World Convention and Eduniversal, it ought to be the new name of the event ! Study Abroad Coordinator, CANIE Europe Chapter President, Alethea Director of Sustainable Partnerships
🎉 For the very first time, NAFSA: Association of International Educators is including Sustainability in International Education as a new theme for the Poster Fair section of its Annual Conference, taking place in New Orleans in 2024. I have been a Poster Fair Organizer (or PFO, as they call it - people in the United States seem to absolutely ADORE acronyms :) for many years, and my feedback has always been the same: please, please please INCLUDE SUSTAINABILITY as a theme, if you don't create space for it, how can we even talk about it (let alone ACT)? 🖼 (In the pic below, my tireless conference buddy Daniel Ponce-Taylor and I talking about Greening Conferences last year - our poster was submitted under "Advocacy in International Education" for lack of better alternatives) SO I was super happy to see it listed this year, and even happier to be the PFO for that theme! (big thanks to my dearest Shaina Dorow, I am 100% sure you have a role here.... and kudos to NAFSA President Dr. Fanta Aw for moving things forward - baby steps, but important ones!) ❓ Now what? To all my CANIE: Climate Action Network for International Educators friends, my Alethea Global Cooperative colleagues, and anyone interested in having climate action, climate justice, and sustainability discussed more at big conferences: YOU HAVE TIME UNTIL DECEMBER 6TH to submit a poster proposal!!! Here comes the link to start the application: https://lnkd.in/d9EknzaM "This poster fair highlights the vital role of international education in combatting climate change and fostering environmental sustainability. Proposals showcase the following: - Campus and international office initiatives on climate action - Innovative approaches and best practices that integrate sustainability principles into education abroad programs, curriculum development, and campus operations 🏃♀️ What are you waiting for? If you have questions, or doubts or just want to have a virtual coffee with me to talk about your proposal, feel free to reach out. Happy to make space for you! #climateemergency #internationalhighered #studyabroad #agenda2030 #timeisnow #timetoact

Through her collaboration with NIRAS, PhD student Eva Paola Kvist Campos is shining light on this challenge through her thesis on the strategic development and implementation of mobility hubs in urban and rural areas. 🚗⚡🔋 At NIRAS, we take pride in working with students, both Masters and PhDs. Collaborating with students creates new ideas and innovation, and we enjoy building on knowledge, data and guidance available and watching students grow through the projects they’re working on. That’s why the NIRAS ALECTIA Foundation continuously supports PhD projects. 👨🎓 👩🎓 This PhD project focuses on interdisciplinary and systemic methods to develop sustainable mobility hubs (places to interchange transport and central points in urban or rural development). It looks at key strategic factors such as business models, partnerships, and sustainability actions to unveil the potential for hub development. It addresses the challenge of decarbonising the transport industry and improving sustainable travel behaviour. 🛴 NIRAS develops many projects related to hub development, with Eva’s PhD project playing an important role in staying at the forefront of industry trends while shaping new methods and tools for creating sustainable mobility strategies. 🏙️ 👉 Meet Eva and learn more about the project and her work in the video below or get to know her in this article: https://lnkd.in/gXtdHJbM #HereWeGrow #SustainableMobility #MobilityHubs
