As your Product Manager, I will drive the end-to-end product execution and work alongside shared services and business leaders to identify and implement technology solutions that support your scaling business. I will develop a deep understanding of your customer’s process and needs, while keeping a pulse on the broader company strategy and objectives. Dear Product Managers: What..... would you say.... you do here? Most people think of a "product manager" like this: ► Works with customers and the market ► Helps prioritize major initiatives relative to market demand/sales needs ► Instilling a compelling vision of a product's future This role is rarely accountable for actual delivery or getting into the details, unless engineering and product share the same reporting structure. The technical depth usually stops at "does the UI look nice?" or "does it work?" There is nothing fundamentally wrong with this. But the business of building complex things requires another role: ► Take the overall vision and shepherd it through the details ► Answer engineer questions without always saying "yes.... and no...." (you know who you are) ► Know the problem space thoroughly ► Engage in the dirty business of deep conceptual discussion, APIs, and features ► Make sure Jira is well-groomed 😡 ► Help engineering juggle substantial trade-offs in near-real-time ► Deal in stories, story points, conceptual cardinalities, and may be able to tell you that your database schema looks a little wrong at first glance Historically, this role was labeled "business analyst," "technical product manager," "system engineer," "system architect," and "product owner" (for all the agile folk out there). Sometimes, the role is in the technical domain, sometimes it is in the product domain. Sometimes this second role is also called "product manager." Are you confused yet? These two roles are 𝐮𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧. Exceptions only in very rare cases 🦄 Without that second role, your engineering team is probably doing that work behind the scenes, and calling it "design," or is simply taking longer to deliver.
