The UK Government has now published its battery strategy which is looking to address battery manufacturing issues as well as make the UK more attractive in comparison to other international markets. Initial thoughts are that the UK's approach is to 'out-think' 🧠 rather than 'out-spend' 💷 in up-skilling, and investment in battery innovation and R&D 👩🔬. The UK wont be able to compete on subsidies with the U.S, EU or China so it is playing to its traditional strengths 💪. UK to look to become a market leader in battery manufacturing, needed to prevent EV manufacturers upping shores 🏭. There is going to be a focus on the midstream refining process for critical materials. This is particularly important given pricing and delays in the battery supply chain 🚢. We have also witnessed more and more geo-political events in recent years which has had the effect of increasing tensions between countries which leaves supply chains vulnerable. Given the importance of net-zero and mineral scarcity countries are looking to shore up their supply chains in different ways. We may start to see companies take a similar approach to the Government in securing their own supply chains by partnering with other companies 💼. We have seen EV manufacturers partner with recycling facilities, lithium miners etc. Maybe we see more of a vertically integrated strategy from downstream EV manufacturers and BESS sponsors? 💡 Call for evidence on battery end-of-life management - I expect this will be very similar to the EU's recent legislation which will focus on a circular economy for batteries, including second life applications, and how to make batteries safe and marketable to purchasers. Too much divergence on this and the UK may lose an export market in the EU ♻ Here are some more highlights: (1) £2 billion of new capital and R&D funding for zero emission vehicles, batteries, and their supply chains for five years to 2030. (2)  £50 million in developing the UK’s battery world-class capabilities, from R&D to industrialisation. (3) £11 million in 20 competition winners developing technologies across the battery value chain. (4) Explore opportunities to promote the establishment of R&D centres in the UK by leading battery and EV manufacturers. (5) Explore the case for new financial mechanisms to support start-ups in critical technological areas. (6) Expand market access for the trade of critical minerals and promote high international standards in supply chains when negotiating new Free Trade Agreements. (7) Assess foreign investment into battery manufacturing and the supply chain under the NSI Act on a case-by-case basis. (8) Work with industry to accelerate grid connections and have a connections process that is fit for the future. (9) Ensure that manufacturing skills training and education is well supported. BASF has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s DOE Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations for negotiation to receive up to $75 million to introduce low-carbon syngas production from recycled chemical byproduct streams at our Freeport, TX site.   By recycling liquid byproducts from existing production processes into low-carbon syngas through electrically powered reformation, we aim to decrease CO2 emissions and support a more circular value creation.   This project would be another step toward reaching our 2050 net zero goal while representing an important investment in sustainable manufacturing in the region.   Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dBY2_MqR   #Sustainability #Innovation #CircularEconomy #NetZeroEmissions

NGC honored as “Green Factory” NGC was recently honored for its transformation and development of green manufacturing capabilities. Nanjing High Speed Gear Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (in short: NGC) and its subsidiaries, Nanjing High Speed & Accurate Gear (Group) Co., Ltd., and NGC (Baotou) Transmission Equipment Co., Ltd., were certified by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of in China’s Province Jiangsu as a green factory.   For NGC, as one of the main gearbox manufacturers for wind energy, the responsibility and urge for clean energy, low consumption, and high efficiency in its manufacturing is more than an inevitable must. Being green and eco-friendly is what we are fully committed to and focused on. Having this in mind, we are continually working on becoming greener and greener. Our product life cycle concept takes into consideration the consumption of resources and the generation and discharge of pollutants from the very beginning, making the upmost effort to minimize those at every stage. NGC’s continual investments in green manufacturing pay off. In 2023 for example, packaging materials could be lowered by 25% compared to the previous year, and VOC’s emissions decreased by 15.5% compared to 2022, to name just a few. NGC will continue to pursue low-carbon manufacturing to reach new heights in sustainability. BASF will be the first company in North America to provide cathode active materials produced with recycled metals on a commercial scale starting in 2024: BASF and Nanotech Energy have agreed to partner to significantly reduce the CO2 footprint of Nanotech’s lithium-ion #batteries for the North American market. The agreement aims to close the loop for lithium-ion batteries in North America, with BASF producing cathode active materials from recycled metals in Battle Creek, Michigan, for the usage in lithium-ion battery cells produced by Nanotech Energy. Feeding recycled metals into the production of new lithium-ion batteries can reduce the CO2 impact of batteries by about 25 percent compared to the use of primary metals from mines.
