21 years ago today, a small company with eleven employees launched its website. It was anything but an overnight success; that first month attracted a whopping 4,500 members, and only 81,000 by the end of the year. I joined as an employee in early 2008, and I have not-so-fond memories of an offsite that summer at the Half Moon Bay Lodge where it seemed that every metric was headed in the wrong direction; I know some of us left thinking that merely surviving the next two years would be a minor miracle. But in characteristic company fashion, we put our heads down and kept plugging away. So I know almost everyone—past and present—who’s worn a LinkedIn badge is immensely proud that our little company that could is now 21!
Thank you, Arvind Such a lovely post. I still vividly recall meeting Deep Nayan Hari Jeff and you in 2009 in India, when I was running marketing at CNBC, and we had done the LinkedIn Polls partnership. The platform was just beginning to grow here and today it is one of the largest markets globally. Many Congratulations to you and everyone who has built LinkedIn over the years. It has been a truly pioneering platform in more ways than one.
Happy Cinco de Linko!
Fond memories 😍 of the early days at the little service office in SG!
Anyone remember the first LinkedIn office on Shoreline, down the hall from Friendster? I'm guessing that the cluttered desk is Reid Hoffman's. LinkedIn incorporated on March 6, 2003, celebrated as Alamo Day, National Dentist Day, National Frozen Food Day, National Oreo Cookie Day, National White Chocolate Cheesecake Day, Shaq's birthday and also Michelangelo's — take your pick. Launching 60 days after incorporation is impressive, even today. As an outsider looking in, the first few hundred members looked to be employees, friends, roommates, girlfriends and boyfriends, investors, portfolio company CEOs, landlords and such. I was member 140-something. They had lots of friends eager to join, validating the thesis and execution.
Arvind Rajan, I created an account in 2008 (early adopter 🙋♀️), when I graduated from residency, and learnt so much from people in other professions. There weren't a lot of doctors on LI at that time. It's interesting that after 16 years, perspectives from other non-healthcare professionals on LI continues to fuel my creativity as I think about healthcare processes- a good side effect 😊 Congratulations to all of you that have worked or are working at Linked in 👏🏻
I remember someone showing me LinkedIn in 2006 and thinking to myself - this is never going to go anywhere! How little i knew the impact it would have, especially on my professional life only a couple of years later!
I joined in 2011. Fond memories of LinkedIn and the culture at that time

2moArvind Rajan I remember being with you and the team at Half Moon Bay Lodge in summer '08 ... I'm just glad you never told me surviving the next 2 years would be a minor miracle 😁. I recall just putting our head's down, doing good work, plugging away, and creating a narrative to monetize what would become one of the greatest companies in the history of modern enterprise. I'm glad to have been on this ride with so many incredible people and colleagues for nearly the past 17 years. It's always been about the mission and vision - helping professionals become more productive and successful everyday, creating economic opportunity for every member of the global workforce, and just doing well by doing good. #linkedin Mike Gamson Reid Hoffman Ryan Roslansky Daniel Shapero Jeff Weiner
