How do you grow a green economy? In this episode of Sustainable Forces Podcast, our host, Dr Michelle Dickinson (MNZM), chats to David Miller, Managing Director at C40 Cities and Brice Richard, our Australasia Strategy and Insights Leader, on how together we can capture the USD$10.3T global green economic opportunity. David shares: “There are building blocks to green economies happening in lots of places in the world, and if we can build successfully on what’s happening somewhere and make it happen in more places, I would argue that you really can build a green economy.” Together, we will learn: • What a green economy is • How to capture the opportunity • Ways to implement green initiatives • Easily adoptable opportunities for organisations Listen and subscribe here: https://bit.ly/4cCefUC #GreenEconomy #SustainableForces

Coastal cities have long thrived as bustling hubs of trade and culture. But with climate change altering our shorelines, we face new challenges. Rising seas, fiercer storms, and erosion demand urgent solutions. At Hunter's Point South in NYC, we’re leading by example. This former industrial zone is now a beacon of sustainable development, harmonizing with nature to guard against floods and rising tides. Hear more from Vincent Lee, Principal, on Hunter's Point South and explore the actions were taking to build resilience into coastal cities: https://lnkd.in/g4B9brDS #WeAreArup #ChangingCoastlines #UrbanResilience #ClimateAction #HuntersPointSouth

The world is facing record breaking temperatures. But people experience heatwaves differently depending on where they live in cities, so it was great to see the Financial Times publish a letter from Dima Zogheib, our Nature Positive Design lead, on how we can best target solutions. We know nature can help cool down cities, but we need to distribute it well so everyone can enjoy access to it. Chief heat officers can play a key role in making that happen. #WeAreArup
Extreme heat is becoming more life threatening, and the Financial Times report on heat deaths was a timely reminder as we face the hottest summer on record. As we highlighted in our Arup Urban Heat Snapshot, this danger doesn’t affect everyone equally, so it’s vital we take action to protect the vulnerable populations most at risk in cities. I wrote to the FT about the action needed to keep cities liveable – including using AI and digital tools to model how our designs influence urban ‘hot spots’. To keep focus on the problem and galvanise this action, cities need to follow the examples of Athens, Dhaka, and others to appoint chief heat officers. It has been inspiring to work with Eleni (Lenio) Myrivili who has spearheaded action in Athens and globally to help build resilience to heat, so it is great to see her work and others reach a wider audience. #heatwave #urbanresilience #climateaction

We believe AI will be indispensable for decarbonising property, energy, transport, and other large-scale infrastructure, so it’s brilliant to see our Global Digital Leader Will Cavendish making the positive case for its use in The Guardian. #WeAreArup
There has been a lot of speculation about the energy needed to power AI and what this means for carbon emissions. But we need to think about this in the context of other sectors like construction and transport, which have emissions that far exceed what we can expect to see from AI. That’s before we even begin to consider the decarbonisation opportunities that AI will bring. In my sector – the built environment – we need it to help shift away from carbon intensive materials like concrete and to reduce emissions in transport, energy, and buildings. I wrote to The Guardian to explain why we need a shift in the debate in AI, and it’s great to see that message reaching a wider audience – we won’t solve the climate and nature crises without it. https://lnkd.in/eu8nZmDN Dan Allen Chiraag Amarnani Henry Brooke Ishani Bechoo Alice Nicholl Jen Workman Tom Wilcock Sankar V S Gideon D'Arcangelo Jingfeng Xu Pádraig Kenny Tristram Carfrae RDI Jerome Frost Tom Heath Rob Greig Tembi Hommes Pete Hannam Ramaseshan Kannan David David Fiona Cousins Erin McConahey, PE FASHRAE Amy Shen Caro Ames Matthew Price James Jarvis Jennifer DiMambro #wearup #ai #climateaction #sustainability

We’ve been named Category Winner, Professional Services, Engineering & Advisory, in the Australian Financial Review’s Sustainability Leaders List for helping to pioneer the use of sustainable concrete in construction and infrastructure. Concrete is integral for our roads, bridges, rail, and buildings. It also makes up nearly 9% of global greenhouse gas emissions. So we asked ourselves, how can we make it more sustainable? Working with clients and partners across the entire supply chain, we have helped develop new forms of sustainable concrete, and introduced these solutions to major infrastructure projects across Australia. The result? By using concrete alternatives in some of our projects, we have already delivered 50-80 per cent cement reduction using 10-20 per cent recycled material. Collaboration with clients and industry partners has also seen industry wide change – from product design and project application to influencing policy and industry standards.
