Joel Valdez || “I just love showing people the world that I see and the beauty that God has instilled all around us.” Joel is a rising star within the southwest art community. He describes himself as a fine artist using primarily oils as well as other mediums. After studying and teaching at the Animation Academy - located in Burbank, California, Joel worked professionally as a creative designer but soon realized his true passion was painting fine art. In 2019, Joel enrolled at the prestigious Florence Academy of Art of Italy and studied figure drawing and plein air. His works have been displayed in Tubac, Phoenix, and Casa Grande, AZ. Joel is the proud grandson to the late Mary Lee and Joel D Valdez, Tucson’s longest serving City Manager and Sr. Vice President of Business affairs at the University of Arizona. Writing is a transformative act that can transmute experience into inspiration. When I started getting involved in photography as a young man – intentionally seeking beauty with a camera tethered round my neck – what I saw around me changed in a matter of months – I became a photographer. The surrounding world became beautiful and new, my eye would effortlessly train in on perfect angles, magic light, the lines and figures of subjects. It was as if I stepped into a parallel dimension of visual riches that was always there, skating by unnoticed prior. Writing is an even more powerful practice as it spins the perception of the world into narrative, detail, mise-en-scène, and character. When writing eventually turns one into a writer, the writer turns life into art. Living inside the novel of your life is intoxicating, sometimes dangerous, but always enchanted. Disenchantment is the recipe of the mundane, overly predictable, and uninteresting – a precondition for ennui. The process of writing opens up attention to the new, the detailed reality surrounding you that is beyond the hardened and rigid expectations of the superficial glance. How you deal with a situations, when you can't do your artist routines for a couple of days or weeks? Do you feel lost or is it okay to do nothing for a while? I wasn't able to handle these situations for a long time. I felt absolutely out of balance, that time is passing beside me and I don't belong to art world. I know, it may sounds silly, but as I mentioned a few posts ago, to be an artist is a bless and curse at once. It took me a long time to learn, that times "when you do nothing" are also creating processes. It's time to be open, observe yourself, how you feel in those moments, where your routine is out of balance and receive impressions from your environment you're at. You're also getting more and more hungry for create something and when the time will come, you're gonna create with more passion.
