I’m a bit stunned, to be honest. I’d kind of forgotten how amazing people- especially hospitality people- can be. Since announcing my redundancy last Monday, I’ve had: 👉 Over 10 face to face meetings with CEO’s, NED’s and recruiters 👉 Triple that for phone calls/messages from brands discussing potential opportunities 👉 Mentorship advice and offers of help from people in the industry 👉 LinkedIn messages from people I haven’t worked with in years offering help and/or potential work 👉 Most importantly- just so many amazing people telling me the magic words: ‘you’re gonna be just fine.’ I forgot how absolutely incredible we are as an industry. Hospitality folk just have this way of picking you up, dusting you off and offering to take you for a pint down the Winchester until this whole thing blows over. So, thank you to each and every one of you. It’s not just the job offers that make the difference. It’s the words of support and encouragement you’ve given me that really mean so, so much. Dear Job Seeker, I spoke to a new acquaintance I met on LinkedIn, and she recently left a job. She didn't want to, but she found it intolerable. She had a boss who was a micromanager, and that was making her job very difficult. She tried to go to HR and the boss's boss but got nowhere. They knew it was a problem but did nothing about it. She thought it was "unfair" that she needed to leave. She resisted this for a while. She was scared. But finally gave in. A recruiter reached out to her with an opportunity. It was a good one that met her needs. She took it. And many months later, she is SO happy. She has a great boss and a good environment. And... Her former employer closed her facility, and everyone would need to move to keep their job. I am glad it worked out for her. She did what she could to make the situation better. But when you can't get things changed. Sometimes, you have to initiate the change. And yes, it is unfair when you are not the cause of the problem. But your actions can then be the solution. Fun fact about me - my role at Orbis is my first office job. Do I think I'm behind or have failed at this preconceived notion that you should start working straight from school or university? No. What I do know is that everyone's journey is different. Would you believe me if I told you that I was walking around the streets in -4 degree weather, knocking on doors and selling wifi while the hail bounced off my head? A lot of people would be ashamed to admit this, but not me. It is a part of my experience and has molded me into who I am today. Scared of rejection? Try having 48 doors slammed in your face a day. If I hadn't accidentally joined the world of cold calling, I probably wouldn't have been as ambitious, as mentally strong, and as inspired to do as well as I have in such a short period of time (in my marketing career that is). If you aren't where you think you should be in life, that's okay - everyone is travelling through life at their own pace. You're not behind and you're not ahead. Despite my best efforts and diverse experiences, finding a job here feels like searching for a needle in a haystack. So, I’ve decided to channel my inner explorer and seek greener pastures where my talents are appreciated! Here’s the exciting part: Starting in June, I’ll spend a whole month focusing on expanding my network on LinkedIn in the vibrant Scandinavian countries. By connecting with professionals and building relationships online first, I’ll be well-prepared before actually moving there at the end of June. This way, Grogu 🐶 (my trusty flying companion who insists on an aisle seat) and I can hit the ground running when we arrive. Here’s the game plan: Professional Side: 1. Do you like leaving a conversation with the other person smiling? As some of you know, I recently took a part-time job at REI while searching for my next adventure. Here are a few reasons I took that part-time job. To be around people who enjoy similar things To be surrounded by the outdoor lifestyle To get out of the job search rut I realized, though, that there is so much more I love about this job, and that's this: talking to people about something that brings a smile to their faces. Every day I work, I hear stories about people's upcoming trips or a hobby they are excited about. Sometimes, it's a 5-minute conversation, sometimes 20 minutes, but I love that I can walk away feeling like I made them smile because they were able to share something that brings them joy. This is the same thing when you're in a sales role. Let customers tell you more about their company and their jobs. Let them tell you what makes their business successful, what makes it different, and what makes them excited to come to work. Allowing people to talk about what brings them happiness or what makes them successful leaves a positive note on the conversation. People want to be heard, especially about something that they themselves are passionate about, so listen to the stories. You'll often find that connection allows you to have a better relationship. Missed Call or Missed Opportunity? In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, it's easy to brush off a missed call, thinking it's just another random ring. But think about it, what if hidden behind that missed call, lies an opportunity you don't want to miss! Personally it has happened quite a lot with me. I remember, once I was at the movies and the phone rang up. Now one could easily ignore it and carry on with the fun, but I took a minute to answer the call and assured that I'll get back to it once I'm free. By taking that call, I managed to strike a balance between enjoying the moment and grabbing a great work opportunity! There's something which I've observed, it's noteworthy that a lot of people I know who are on the managerial position or doing really great in their professional career or successful business tycoons share a common trait—they consistently answer calls and ensure they respond to everyone. The learning here is that being present and responsive has it's own power. Returning a missed call isn't just about keeping connections but it's about opening doors to unexpected possibilities.
