Innovation in complex multi-stakeholder environments does not just happen - investing time and capacity to build relationships, and focusing not only on WHAT needs to be done, but also on HOW effective collaboration can be facilitated, is key.

It was such a pleasure to chair the Careers in Industry panel discussion with Lakshini Mendis-David, PhD and Greg O'Grady at the recent New Zealand Association of Clinical Research (NZACRes) conference. One attendee asked me what it’s like being the President of a board. This is what it’s like: the photo below is me sifting through paperwork and all the promotional material I’ve picked up over the last few months at recent meetings and conferences. I spend hours every weekend doing board work- it’s a garden that needs constant attention. When I’m not planning our next event or initiative, I’m planning our board meetings and thinking about ways to make our organisation more efficient. If you’re interested in good governance practices, I recommend the courses provided by the Institute of Directors in New Zealand. We need to make positions of leadership attractive to ordinary people (not just the top senior people) who want to serve their communities. If you think you’re up to being on a board, I encourage you to join the IoD and to serve your community.

“It’s amazing how much consensus there is across such a large, diverse group of people!” That’s a comment I overheard at a recent public participation event. Consensus is a natural outcome of quality participation processes. When people meet and talk with each other, get to know people they’d never otherwise encounter, and learn about perspectives and experiences they never even knew existed, they become invested in finding solutions that work for everyone at the table. “Humans can be nudged to demonize — or to cooperate,” Amanda Ripley writes in “High Conflict: Why We Get Trapped and How We Get Out. “The traditions and systems matter far more than we think.” Being invited and tasked to work together takes us out of the adversarial mindset of “winning” arguments and activates our compassion and genuine desire to listen to and care for each other. It’s hard to maintain an “us vs them” mindset when there are multiple voices and experiences present, aligning and diverging in a complex ways. Enough shared values and needs emerge to achieve some level of consensus around the issues the gathered group faces as well as agreement on starting points for addressing those issues. Opportunities to see and explore our interdependence help build strong communities where everyone is valued and invested in mutual thriving. I recently had the opportunity to run a workshop with the Board of one of our amazing Victorian peak bodies on how civic organisations participate in civic discourse. It’s not lost on anyone that we need strong policy guidance inside our organisations to help us have better conversations about issues of local, national and global significance. There are so many questions we should be asking ourselves in the practice of good governance, such as how we gather intelligence and form our views, whose voices are represented and amplified, how we build consensus and how we hold space for dissenting views. All of this requires negotiation by courageous and skilful leaders. We need better tools for navigating challenging conversations inside organisations, beginning with questioning whether conflict is always bad and to be avoided. Challenging existing systems and processes can be a pathway for unearthing things that may be invisible or suppressed, such as systemic inequity, or a valid starting point for organisational transformation. (I’m definitely not saying that poorly managed conflict is good – it’s not!) But I am looking forward to working more with curious and courageous organisations who want to wade into this space with care and thoughtfulness.

Here's what we uncovered: ✅ 55% of associations lack a formal process for taking a stance on social issues. 📜 27% have a formal process in place. 🚀 6% are in the process of developing one. 🤷 12% are unsure if such a process exists within their association.
