In my roles as head internal auditor and Chief Finance Officer, I've navigated pervasive challenges in corporate settings, with office politics and corporate governance dominating my responsibilities. Office politics, marked by power struggles, may jeopardize the efficiency of financial and internal audit functions. Corporate governance demands a balance between regulations and strategic alignment, requiring ethical awareness. I've grappled with the challenge of being caught between conflicting alliances among directors and managers. Influencing decision-making, if not managed appropriately by being independent, may introduce biases into financial and audit reporting. Upholding professional independence and reporting objectively are vital. Peter Drucker's wisdom on leadership guides me: "Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things." Navigating these complexities requires a commitment to integrity and transparency, not just professionally but morally, contributing to organizational success and sustainability.

Most GCs report directly to the CEO, reflecting the importance of their role in strategic decision-making. This setup provides GCs with the necessary resources and independence to guide company strategies effectively. For those 20% of GCs who report to other executives (who, in turn, report to the CEO), establishing authority and clear communication is even more critical. We interviewed audit leaders to predict what the next 12 – 18 months have in store….   Technology, productivity, and succession planning were revealed as the top areas of focus.
