Arpan is deeply grateful to Ms. Disha Pinky Shaikh for her inspiring talk on dismantling gender diversity and inclusion. True diversity cannot exist until we break free from the preconceived boxes of gender roles and identities. Disha's message highlighted the importance of EVERYONE being part of the conversation, especially cisgender allies. Every voice is crucial in challenging norms that perpetuate inequity. It made us reflect on the responsibility of all of us, who work with children. By fostering values of inclusion and equity, we can shape the future generation. These children will be the nation builders of tomorrow, and by equipping them to embrace diversity and challenge societal norms, we can create a more equitable future for all. Together, we can build a world where everyone thrives as Human Beings, unencumbered by societal expectations. Our journey of unlearning and learning on this issue has just begun. Share in the comments below how you have been able to be more inclusive and gender diverse. Let's keep the conversation going! #GenderEquality #InclusionMatters #BreakTheBias #EmbraceEquity

In a world striving for progress, gender equality isn't just a goal - it's a necessity. Every voice, regardless of gender, holds the power to drive innovation, foster understanding, and build a more inclusive society for a better tomorrow. But as parents, teachers, and caregivers, do we really empower all genders equally? Or do we hold unconscious biases and stereotypes that manifest as incorrect dos and don’ts for our children? On occasion of International Women’s Day, we have chosen #genderequality as today’s WING Filmy Fridays short film. Made by VI-XI class students of Delhi Public School, Samabalpur, the #shortfilm depicts gender inequality in and around the school and their daily lives. It demonstrates how the expectations from parents, for the same task, change dramatically for two siblings - one male and one female. At school, it portrays how decisions, oftentimes, are not based on students' interests and skills but are incorrectly predetermined according to gender. Just wrapped up an engaging 5-day workshop with the Monitoring Evaluation Accountability and Learning team. I learned so much about making M&E easier to use and transforming data into powerful narratives that tell a story. Today, I had the pleasure of exploring Gender Sensitivity and ways we could make our programs Gender transformative. Gender sensitivity means recognizing and addressing the different needs, preferences, and constraints of individuals based on their gender. This understanding ensures that interventions and evaluations are not reinforcing gender stereotypes or biases and that they address the different experiences of all gender groups. During the capacity sharing, my main focus was on the Washington group of questions to build inclusive programs. We ended the day with actionable and practical ways to improve. I'm excited to apply what I've learned to create more inclusive programs and measure outcomes effectively. #GenderSensitivity #InclusivePrograms #MEL #CapacitySharing

I am excited to have completed my course on gender equity, and I want to share a few reflections. This course has been incredibly enlightening, deepening my understanding of the challenges and opportunities related to gender equity in various aspects of life. I learned about the critical role of policies and practices that support gender equity, such as equal pay, flexible work arrangements, and parental leave. Implementing and advocating for these policies can make a tangible difference in achieving gender equity. The course also highlighted the importance of allyship and advocacy. Being an ally means actively supporting and standing up for gender equity, whether by amplifying underrepresented voices, challenging discriminatory behavior, or mentoring others. This course has equipped me with the knowledge and tools to contribute to a more inclusive and fair society, and I am eager to continue learning and growing in this area.

For folks working in social inclusion, social justice, gender equality, EDI/DEI, and learning &development, or indeed, if you’re not, but you’re simply interested in your own personal development, this course on Applied Theatre for GESI, expertly faciliated by Aanchal Jain and Lucy Ferguson, PhD should be top of your list for 2024. Pop it on your Christmas list, you’re worth it! Lots of people talk about sustainable transformation, but traditional courses and tick box exercises will not make that happen. With the Applied Theatre approach (which has Brazilian origins btw) there’s no right or wrong answers. If you want real transformation, then step out of your comfort zone, trust in the process and move towards perspective taking and bewilderment, because change doesn’t come from passive learning and it doesn’t come from comfort zones! So, lean into discomfort, it’s critical for introspection and that can lead to behaviour change. Here’s me on the Golden Gate Bridge talking a bit (more!) about why you should do the course. Alas, the camera doesn’t love me, but luckily my friends do, so that’s ok! Is it possible to achieve a leveled gender balance? Power dynamics play a pivotal role in shaping the discourse around gender equality and inclusion, influencing the distribution of resources, opportunities, and decision-making authority within societies. In many contexts, historical and cultural norms have entrenched hierarchical structures that perpetuate gender-based disparities, reinforcing systemic biases and limiting the participation of marginalized genders in various spheres of influence. These power differentials often manifest in unequal access to education, employment, and political representation, fostering an environment where one gender holds a dominant position over others, consequently impeding the realization of true gender equality and inclusion. Efforts to address gender equality and inclusion necessitate a comprehensive examination and deconstruction of existing power dynamics, aiming to dismantle oppressive structures and foster an environment that promotes equitable participation and representation for all genders. Empowering marginalized genders through educational initiatives, affirmative action policies, and targeted mentorship programs can help counteract the imbalances perpetuated by existing power structures, fostering an environment that values diverse perspectives and contributions. Moreover, cultivating inclusive spaces that prioritize the amplification of underrepresented voices and perspectives can serve as a catalyst for challenging traditional power dynamics and fostering a more equitable and just society for all genders. #Genderbalance #genderinclusion #genderequality

It was great partnering with BiGS Fellow Stephanie Creary, Harvard Business School's HBS Race, Gender & Equity Initiative, The Wharton School and INSEAD for the informative "Relationships Across Differences Roundtable" conference earlier this week. As Drew Keller, director of the HBS Institute for Business in Global Society, shares below, many of the #scholars and #ChiefDiversityOfficers who attended argued that it's time for businesses to shift towards transformational approaches to #inclusion by prioritizing human-centered strategies over profit-driven tactics, recognizing that genuine change requires a culture shift. Check out more #insights in Drew's post, and be sure to follow us for more insights on advancing inclusion in business. #DEI #LGBTQ #humanrights #business #businessandsociety #leadership #strategy #culture #change #transformation #diversity #inclusion #CDO #CDBO #CHRO #CEO
It has been a phenomenal week of insightful learning about advancing #DEI and #LGBTQ rights. The week kicked off with a great conference organized by BiGS Fellow Stephanie Creary and co-hosted by HBS Institute for Business in Global Society, Wharton Coalition for Equity and Opportunity (CEO), and INSEAD, bringing together leading DEI scholars and Chief Diversity Officers from top firms. I ended the week on a high note, speaking on an inspiring panel discussion commemorating International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (#IDAHOBIT) with Standard Chartered. I learned a LOT, but here are three quick takeaways: 1. Shift from transactional to transformational approaches to inclusion: Too often, business leaders discuss diversity as a way to quickly boost profits, a strategy that research by BiGS Fellow Jamillah Williams suggests ultimately harms inclusion. Instead, businesses should prioritize human-centered, culture-changing strategies and rhetoric to meet DEI goals. Only through a broader, deep-rooted commitment to transforming the corporate culture can genuine and lasting changes in DEI be achieved. 2. Focus on long-term, intersectional strategies: Changing cultural norms and attitudes isn't a sprint but a marathon, and it takes everyone in an organization working together to make sustained progress. We must not allow the temporary setbacks – inevitable in any journey of change – to deter our commitment to progress. It's critical to remember that progress, once made, can also be quickly lost. 3. Don't waiver from your values: Progress toward DEI goals and LGBT rights have recently faced several legal and political threats. Rather than allow these hurdles to dampen our efforts, we need to wholeheartedly embrace our organizational values and actively shape our narrative. As one of yesterday's panelists pointed out, if you don't define your organization's approach to supporting equity and inclusion in your organization and community, the world will define it for you. Ultimately, I leave this week feeling hopeful and inspired about the resolve and dedication of people all over the world dedicated to creating a more inclusive and just world. As always, we will continue to share lessons and insights on the BiGS Knowledge Hub to help you along your way - stay tuned! https://lnkd.in/eReTpN4s
