Well said, George Fahmy, and happy to see you recognize the value of hands-on skills assessments. It's often hard to explain to hiring managers that just having a nice discussion with candidates is not enough to make a decent and fair hiring decision. Why am I adding fair to the mix? Because practical assessments allow you to find hidden gems in a pool of candidates. Perhaps someone's resume is not the best, or they forgot to add some skills, or they don't have 10 years of experience with specific technology. But if you give them a relevant task and can see them completing it better/faster/smarter than other candidates, it gives you (a hiring manager) a big confidence boost that this might be the right candidate to work with.

Recently came across this article and thought it was interesting. I am in the unicorn hunting business and at times it can be difficult to quantify what is exactly needed when hiring. I do see a lot of differences in these positions but the biggest one I have seen in the past few years is having these engineers capable of writing comprehensive code. 🗑️ Hiring devops engineers is a waste of money 🗑️ They appear to create a lot of value but actually copy undifferentiated scripts from a previous job while increasing infra overhead and making it harder for devs to contribute & manage infra. Developers should manage their own app deployments, automated by tools like https://flightcontrol.dev Devops engineers should learn to code so they can provide more value to the organization by shipping features. P.S. What most people hiring a first devops engineer don't realize is that you actually need to hire 2 of them. They are setting up your *production* systems. So you better make sure you have a backup for when the 1 devops is sick, goes on vacation, gets another job, etc.

Do the companies and teams really know what they need when they are hiring on IT? 🤔 💭 Recently I saw A LOT of open positions for literally "DevOps/SRE" engineers, but is even that the same? Do they perform the same kind of tasks? 😑 Reading the book "Becoming SRE" from David Blank-Edelman we can find soon a very clear answer: No. 😮 Even they sometimes use the same tools, the skillsets resides in different sides: DevOps on delivery and SREs on reliability. So why the teams are looking for recently both profiles? Do they really know this difference or they just want to be part of the trend and the new era when all they need is maybe just an Infrastructure Engineer? Is this confussing engineers and not allowing them to develop an area of expertise? Are we attacking correctly the problem or just puting patches until the next alert comes up? What do you think? Maybe my good friend Scott Cudney can add more light into this matter.
