!!! PLEASE DON'T CARVE THE HEART OUT OF BIGWIND !!! Tell Ontario by May 4th @ https://lnkd.in/ggrU6sRX The Ontario government is proposing to operationalize Bigwind Lake Provincial Park in Bracebridge, putting numerous at-risk species and sensitive habitats in grave danger. The proposed infrastructure includes 250 campsites, paved roads, maintenance facilities, food services, and associated hydro lines and sewer systems that will imperil and undermine the ecological integrity of the already small and peaceful park. Bigwind Lake Provincial Park is a natural environment class park. Natural environment class parks are meant to protect recreational landscapes, representative ecosystems and provincially significant elements of Ontario’s natural and cultural heritage and "provide high-quality outdoor recreational and educational experiences." Currently, Bigwind provides low-impact recreational opportunities to hike, canoe, and fish, while protecting the habitat of 14 species at risk (8 of special concern, 3 threatened, and 3 endangered). Bigwind is dominated by mature (100- to 130-year-old) Sugar Maple, Yellow Birch, American Beech, Eastern Hemlock and Eastern White Pine, that provide a home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna existing beneath its canopy. Critically, this habitat provides refuge to the threatened Algonquin Wolf, who had been brought to a point of extinction on account of historical hunting and trapping. Extensive wetland habitat also creates a challenge for cataloguing a large number of the plant species expected to be present in the park, which speaks to Ontario's admission that there is a shortage of information on species. The proposal itself states that there is potential for increased road mortality, habitat loss and fragmentation, increased light and noise pollution, and wildlife habituation, which is the the loss of a natural fear of humans. These "potential" pressures make no progress in reaching the 30x30 plan to protect at least 30% of terrestrial and marine areas by 2030. The deadline for public comments is Saturday, May 4th. Please consider using your voice and sharing this information to help protect our family on this planet. I came across a place I now call Bat Island. I was told there were many swans here however there were no swans but there was a huge bat colony. Please take time to understand why bats are so important to life on this planet. #GoVegan for the animals, the planet, and all future generations. #bats #pollination #environment #respectanimals #respectalllife #vegan #veganfortheanimals #veganforlife https://lnkd.in/gC-s5XTD

This project seems out of step with the need to act on rapid biodiversity loss. What is so important for 1000 habitat trees to be destroyed?
Making a Difference Locally & Globally--Digital Strategist, Connector, Influencer, Entrepreneur, Photographer
Goodbye owls. Goodbye bats. Goodbye over 1,000 trees in Rock Creek Park, home to so many birds... Did you know this deforestation and destroying of critical wildlife habitats is about to take place in our own backyard? Over 1,000 trees are slated to be cut down on Rock Creek Park in the name of redoing a golf course. Who do you know who can put a stop to this tree massacre about to happen in Rock Creek Park? Casey Trees, Sierra Club DC Chapter and many other groups have already voiced opposition to this project to no avail! National Parks Service in partnership with National Links Trust is moving forward with their plan to cut down trees, which are homes to owls, bats and many other creatures, are going to be chopped down. Cintia Cabib created a documentary called Bird Walks, which shared how a community came together to save Red Gate Park, a former golf course into a bird sanctuary. How can we do the same and save the trees in Rock Creek Park? Let's reach out to everyone in our network, including people who work at Rock Creek Park, National Parks Service, National Links Trust and even the local golfing community, to say that we cannot sacrifice trees and wildlife habitats. Let's find another option for improving the Rock Creek Park golf course that does not involve cutting down precious, irreplaceable trees. How can we stop this tree massacre in Rock Creek Park? Who can put pressure on Rock Creek Park’s Acting Superintendent, Brian Joyner and Will Smith, Co-founder of the National Links Trust, to stop this project from moving forward? It would be great if we can turn the golf course into a bird sanctuary like Red Gate Park, but if that's not possible, organizations like Casey Trees need to be involved in the planning process, so trees and wildlife habitats are not destroyed in the process of redoing the golf course. April is Low-Head Dam Public Safety Awareness Month. ⚠️ Here are 3 things you need to know about low-head dams: 1️⃣ They run from bank-to-bank across a river or stream. 2️⃣ They create a “spin cycle” under the water’s surface that can trap even the strongest swimmer wearing a flotation device. 3️⃣ They’ve been nicknamed “drowning machines” for a reason! In cooperation with Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources, we urge everyone to stay safe: Before boating, paddling or floating, find out if there are any low-head dams on your route — and always portage around them.
