As this new initiative gathers momentum and we are preparing to deliver the first event in the series I am looking to the LinkedIn network for help to share this opportunity. Please share with your networks and anyone with a disability who may wish to discover a Paralympic sport. I am really enjoying working with NGB's and key stakeholders on delivering this, the first, stage in this process facilitating a Paralympic sporting journey for new and existing disabled athletes. The passion and enthusiasm of all involved is incredible. Discover your Paralympic Potential: ParalympicsGB’s search for new talent ParalympicsGB has launched a new national initiative set up to identify the next generation of Paralympic athletes, with the first of a series of Discover Days taking place in Middlesborough in November.    The campaign, called Discover your Paralympic Potential, will see come and try sports sessions take place across the country in the build-up to the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, with opportunities to take part in a multitude of summer and winter Paralympic sports and meet with Paralympic medallists. Each session will be geared towards different disabilities with the first event taking place on 4th November at Middlesborough Sports Village, followed by London Olympic Park on 25th November and 10th December at Birmingham University. These events will be for anyone with a visual impairment. Campaign manager and retired Paralympian Ben Quilter, who won judo bronze at London 2012, believes the programme will not only be critical in unearthing new sporting talent, but will provide a fantastic opportunity for disabled people to discover which sport is best for them. Quilter explains: “The Discover your Paralympic Potential programme is the first step for people to find out what their future Paralympic sport could be. If you want to find a competitive pathway and unlock the opportunities that sport offers, then this is a fantastic opportunity. To sign up go to https://lnkd.in/gb3sHdaV. More sessions will take place throughout 2024 to enable those with different impairments to find their future Paralympic sport. 🏆 It's Olympics Eve! 🌍 Although the opening ceremony isn't until Friday evening, the games in Paris get under way tomorrow, with football, rugby sevens, handball, archery and shooting all getting going before we see the athletes parade around with their flags. As well as the events we've come to expect at most Olympic Games, skateboarding, climbing and surfing will again be part of the action after their first inclusion at Tokyo in 2021, while breaking has been included for the very first time. Rugby and football aside, I'm most looking forward to watching plenty of sports I don't usually get the chance to see in non-Olympic years, and there's always at least one event in which I end up becoming heavily invested. In 2012, I was engrossed by the time-keeping controversy in the women's fencing semi-finals. In 2016, I was thrilled to see rugby return to the Olympics and Fiji win their first ever medal - a gold. Last time out, it was a much stranger experience due to COVID, and it was also tricky to watch too much because of the time difference, but I did enjoy watching the two forms of karate included as a one-off event. So, what will it be this year? With a much more favourable time difference, although I'll still have plenty of work to do, I'm sure plenty of events will be vying my attention, so you'll just have to watch this space to see what piques my interest over the next two and a half weeks. Croquet and tug-of-war were once Olympic sports, with croquet making its only appearance in 1900 and tug-of-war returning five more times until 1920. Host countries can now nominate one-off events that "enhance the popularity of the Games," ensuring that the program remains fresh and exciting. Let me share a little story involving more waiting than an overcooked microwave dinner. 🕒 But it's a story that turned waiting into triumph! After my rowing adventures, I thought volleyball might be a bit more of a leisurely pursuit. But life had other plans. Out of the blue, I got the call! 📞 "Pack your bags, James, you're heading to the World Championships in Edmund, Oklahoma!" 🌎 Say what? Oklahoma, here I come! 🤠 Fast forward, and there I was, competing in my 2nd Paralympics, and guess what? It was a HOME GAME! 🏡 The energy, the vibe, the sheer awesomeness of it all! Let's break down some achievements: ✅ Represented Great Britain at 1 World Championships, 1 European Championships, 1 Intercontinental Cup, and the London Paralympics. ✅ Earned 56 caps with the Great Britain Men's Sitting Volleyball Team. ✅ Rocked the National Cup Finals with a runner-up spot in 2010 and 2012 and a semi-finalist stint in 2011. And, of course, we hit the quarter-finals at the 2012 London Paralympics, giving it our all! 🇬🇧💪 Here's the kicker: Life's full of unexpected twists and turns. It might feel like a waiting game, but it's all part of the journey. Challenges? Oh, they'll come knocking, but guess what? You're armed with the most potent weapons – your mindset and determination. My journey had its fair share of ups and downs, but I kept swinging. 🏐 And guess what? Ledecky, known for her long-distance prowess, finished with a time of 15:30.02, setting an Olympic record and securing her eighth career Olympic gold medal. This victory ties her with Jenny Thompson for the most Olympic golds by an American woman and matches the record of 12 total Olympic medals held by Thompson, Natalie Coughlin, and Dara Torres. Reflecting on her achievement, Ledecky expressed her gratitude to the great swimmers who inspired her journey. The race saw Ledecky leading from the start, and while she fell behind her world record pace, she maintained an Olympic record pace throughout. France’s Anastasia Kirpichnikova took silver, and Germany’s Isabel Gose won bronze.
