Chances of a Stellar Collision The Andromeda galaxy (M31) is approaching us, by about 300 kilometres (190 miles) per second measured with respect to the Sun. If you subtract the Sun’s orbital motion around our galaxy (about 230 km per second toward Cygnus), M31 is still approaching the Milky Way by about 130 km per second. Around 5 Billion years into the Future this galaxy will collide with our Milky Way, forming a large elliptical galaxy. The Solar System can currently be found in the Orion spur of one of our galaxy’s spiral arms, situated some 25,000 light-years back from the central core, but after the merger, it is expected to be pushed back to about 100,000 light-years from the centre of the galaxy. The distance separating each individual star is incomprehensibly vast. Even the regions that are densely packed, like globular clusters and nebular clouds, are very spacious. Our Sun is about 696,600km in radius. A golf-ball is about 2.14cm in radius. So that gives us a scale of 1cm to 325,500 (rounded). The nearest star to our Sun is Proxima Centauri (Alpha Centauri C) which is about 39.9 million kilometres away. Therefore: 1cm/(3.255 x 10^5km) x (3.99 x 10^13km) = 1.22 x 10^8cm That is far to large a number to keep in centimetres, so let us convert that to kilometres, so 1,220km or 760 miles to the nearest star to the Sun on that scale. On the same scale, Proxima Centauri would be about the size of a pea! This means that it is like placing a golf-ball on the top of the Empire State Building in New York and a pea on the top of the Willis Tower in Chicago (with plenty of nothingness in between – and you would still have some 40 miles to spare!). Although stars are more common near the centres of each galaxy, the average distance between stars is still some 160 billion (1.6×10^11) km (100 billion mi). That is analogous to one ping-pong ball every 3.2 km (2 mi). Throughout the gradual process of this merger, which will take place over the course of hundreds of millions of years, it is therefore extremely unlikely that any two stars or planets from the merging galaxies would collide.
