We continue our coverage of the exciting research published by Medialogy students at the #INTERACT 2023 Conference. Next up is the work of the students Jonas Lind, Kristian Sørensen, Sompoon Lind, Mads Wagner Sørensen, and Jakob Trærup, together with their supervisor Ivan Nikolov "Better Real-Life Space Utilization in VR Through a Multimodal Guardian Alternative". The paper explores the use of different modalities like visuals, haptics, and sound, together with diegetic and non-diegetic interfaces for better space utilization in #virtualreality Highlights: ✔ Building an interface pipeline containing a number of modalities that can activate when needed by the user ✔ To test these interfaces a full escape room game set in space is built ✔ Head-to-head comparison between the proposed interfaces and the built-in Guardian system in the Meta Quest 2, shows that the proposed system provides better space utilization while raising the level of frustration in users in some cases. I recently recreated one of my earliest #throwback projects back in 2018 - a #VR game about #billiards (or pool). No fancy tech such as AI, MR passthrough, advanced interactions, etc allowed during recreation. Just pure simple VR like the good old days. It's fascinating to see how much I've grown in my #UnityDev journey. Back then it took me 4 weeks plus two teammates to make it barely viable. Now, I managed to spend only half a week working solo - and the result already looks (and works) way better then before. Also adding a couple of extra physics-defying twists like adding a third dimension and zero-gravity, because why not??? P.S. Check out my 1st comment to see how my 2018 project looks like~ P.S. Spatial computing has so many fun capabilities! There has been a lot of discussion around the real world uses for Mixed Reality and Spatial Computing, but, in my opinion, not enough attention is being giving to the playful side of this technology. Entertainment is entering a new dimension where we can engage with content in ways that were previously thought impossible. This example by Aurelio Puerta Martín is the perfect example. By developing a #portal based game this experience provides mind bending entertainment that I can see being utilized in many situations to WOW users. Built in Unity combined with MetaScan, Volograms and Mixamo this is a great showcase of the current state of this technology and I cannot wait to see what else developers can come up with.
