Founder and CEO at Thrive Global

Today Sam Altman and I published a piece in TIME sharing our vision for how AI-driven personalized behavior change can transform healthcare and announcing the launch of Thrive AI Health, a new company funded by the OpenAI Startup Fund and Thrive Global, which will be devoted to building an AI health coach. The company’s mission is to use AI to democratize access to expert-level health coaching to improve health outcomes and address growing health inequities. As Sam and I write, AI could go well beyond efficiency and optimization to something much more fundamental: improving both our health spans and lifespans. With AI-driven personalized behavior change, we have the chance to finally reverse the trend lines on chronic diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, which are directly related to daily behaviors but not distributed equally across demographics. DeCarlos Love — a brilliant product leader passionate about improving health outcomes — has left Google to become Thrive AI Health’s CEO, and I’m very much looking forward to working with him. And The Alice L. Walton Foundation is joining us as a strategic investor to help us scale our impact to underserved communities and reduce health inequities. AI has become central to Thrive Global’s mission to improve health and productivity outcomes, and I’m incredibly passionate about the opportunity to leverage AI to deliver hyper-personalized behavior change across the five key behaviors that Thrive focuses on and that govern our health: sleep, food, movement, stress management and connection. The AI health coach will be embedded in Thrive’s behavior change platform and we look forward to bringing this innovative offering to the market. Read more in TIME: https://lnkd.in/dTzyGZ4S

I applaud your vision Arianna Huffington & Thrive Global but I truly hope your focused on governance and sustainability over profits and potential. Ai as we all know makes mistakes and even the most sophisticated algorithms require “human-centric” guidance. Please ensure you focus on hiring the right people for the right roles to provide the best possible outcomes. Best wishes on this exciting endeavor.

Congrats Arianna Huffington and Sam Altman. This sounds like a leap forward and precisely what we need in these times as we look for ethical applications of Artificial Intelligence cc Aditi Nerurkar, MD, MPH

Ugh, will this give people a universal basic income? Babysit kids? Do tasks for aging parents? Remove the stress when someone loses a job, gets diagnosed with cancer, or has an accident or injury ? Does the app do laundry, clean bathrooms, and run kids to soccer practice? Why do we constantly blame poor health on individual behaviors without ever fixing the system? Is the AI app going to lower rent costs or cover the 3 months deposit? Reduce credit card interest and forgive student loan debt? Will it magically tell those employers who don’t give paid time off to let their employees have off to exercise? Or maybe this app will magically perform much needed access to women’s healthcare especially for women in certain states where birth control and abortion are limited. Ooh- maybe the app will spit out healthy food that is no longer in reach for many people. I am 100% in for AI but this sounds like a way to make more money at the expense of everyone else.

This is welcome news in the sense this initiative is looking at (hopefully) undeserved communities and groups of people. Having said that I am curious to know the following - how is this different if at all from existing apps that focus on the same 5 parameters for improved health and well being, for example Noom - how will AI health coach learn from individual's behaviour? As in what is the prompt architecture going to look like, what rules are going to be set in place, control for drift etc.. It would be fascinating to learn more on the backend (whatever can be shared publicly) - it would be helpful to get to know more on the applied BeSci side, as at the end of the day AI as it is right now is an augmentation tool. To create personalised behavioural change of this level of ambition. would need a lot of data and a host of BeSci applications. Would be interested in thoughts views and additional information
