The SOM Foundation is pleased to announce the winners of the 2023 Research Prize. Two teams—one from the University of Michigan and the University of Cincinnati, and one from the The University of Texas at San Antonio—will each receive a $40,000 prize to conduct original research that contributes to this year’s topic, “Adapting Housing Strategies to Respond to New Realities.” The Research Prize was created in 2018 to cultivate new ideas and meaningful research that addresses the critical issues of our time. Gabriel C. (Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning, University of Michigan) and De Peter Yi (University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning) won with their proposal “Block by Block: Advancing New American Dreams and Housing Justice by Aligning Design with Zoning Reform.” The project seeks to design more just and desirable housing models by engaging the scale of the block. The team will study blocks through both top-down policies and ground-up efforts to reshape their futures, focusing on neighborhoods in Detroit and Cincinnati as starting points. The second winning proposal is “A Taxonomy of Vacancy: Are Underutilized Commercial Strips the Answer to San Antonio’s Housing Shortage?” led by Ian Caine, Esteban Lopez Ochoa, and Wei Zhai (University of Texas at San Antonio School of Architecture + Planning) with Rudy Niño, Jr., AICP (City of San Antonio, Planning Department) and Chris Quattro, PhD (Appalachian State University, College of Arts and Sciences). Pairing data analysis and design thinking, the project will examine how San Antonio policymakers could accelerate multifamily housing production by reimagining the potential of vacant or underused commercial parcels. This research project coincides with current efforts to accommodate an expected influx of over one million people into Bexar County over twenty-five years, requiring the creation of 500,000 new housing units. This year’s jury was led by SOM Foundation Executive Director Iker Gil and included Carlos Bedoya (Cofounder, PRODUCTORA; Founding partner, LIGA Espacio para arquitectura, Mexico City), Johanna Hurme (Cofounder, 5468796 Architecture Inc., Winnipeg), Lorcan O’Herlihy, FAIA O’Herlihy (Founding Principal and Creative Director, Lorcan O'Herlihy Architects [LOHA], Los Angeles and Detroit), and Irene Sunwoo (John H. Bryan Chair and Curator of Architecture and Design, Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago). https://lnkd.in/gBtiz7FQ

Housing is a fundamental aspect of architecture, providing shelter, which is essential for everyone. In urban environments, addressing the housing challenge is both urgent and complex. Social housing initiatives aim to provide a substantial portion of the population with access to this fundamental architectural concept: a home. https://lnkd.in/gb4AwveD

Exciting News! Mission Viejo has taken a significant stride towards enhancing its neighborhoods by adopting new design standards for multi-family housing. These standards not only ensure compliance with state regulations but also empower the community to maintain local control over projects. We have recently partnered with Mission Viejo to revamp the design process for developers. Our goal is to preserve the character of Mission Viejo neighborhoods by “balancing the form and design of existing development with new construction techniques.” At JZMK Partners, our main focus with this project revolves around creating high quality housing within a vibrant, pedestrian-oriented environment. We firmly believe in designing buildings that not only harmonize with one another but also cater to a diverse range of uses. The new standards were unanimously approved by the City Council on July 11 and went into effect immediately. For next steps, the City Council is turning to the public for input on its objective design standards. Join us on this exciting journey towards a more interconnected and community-driven space! #MissionViejo #NeighborhoodEnhancement #DesignStandards #MultiFamilyHousing #CommunityEmpowerment #LocalControl #StateRegulations #DevelopmentRevamp #PreserveCharacter #BalancingFormAndDesign #JZMKPartners #HighQualityHousing #PedestrianOriented #VibrantEnvironment #DiverseRangeOfUses #CityCouncilApproval #PublicInput #ObjectiveDesignStandards #CommunityDriven #InterconnectedSpace #ExcitingJourney #NewConstructionTechniques #BuildingDesign #CityDevelopment #UrbanPlanning #CommunityEngagement #UrbanDesign #CityLiving #SustainableLiving #ResidentialArchitecture #ArchitectureInnovation https://lnkd.in/gAhpYKT2

//MAB Corporation, the developers behind a long-standing 24-year-old development application in Melbourne’s Docklands, have secured unanimous endorsement from the City of Melbourne. The nod comes after meticulous revisions and alterations to the original 1999 application, aligning it with the requirements of city planning officials. 🔥 Initially conceived in 1999 as a proposal for a 50-meter commercial building at 396-416 Docklands Drive, the revised application envisions a dynamic mixed-use precinct featuring two triangular podiums – one on the east and one on the west – accompanied by a total of five towers. The updated plan outlines towers ranging from 50 to 70 meters in height, situated over two 20-meter podiums, catering to residential, office, and retail needs at 396-416 Docklands Drive. Hostile architecture impacts the most vulnerable members of our society, particularly the homeless, by intentionally excluding them from public spaces. By shedding light on this practice, I hope to spark a conversation about the ethical implications of such designs and encourage more inclusive and compassionate approaches to urban planning. Our cities should be spaces where everyone feels welcome and valued, and it’s crucial to advocate for designs that reflect these principles. I invite readers to share their thoughts and perspectives on this. #hostilearchitecture #urbanredevelopment #userexperience
