Comments to the rules of professional conduct that govern the practice of law in the United States-- in particular, the Comments to Rule No. 1 (which speak to the requirement that lawyers be competent in matters with respect to which they represent a client) -- should be amended to provide that lawyers be required to attend one or more hours of programming focused on the topic of wellbeing, as part of their continuing legal education. How can one be competent if one is not well, or-- at the very least-- aware of his/her state of being and the impact it may have on one's advice, or representation? Wellbeing is a critical component of competence that should be recognized and encouraged!
