This #NutritionAndHydrationWeek we will be sharing ways in which Brooke teams across the globe have helped working horses, donkeys and mules access clean, safe drinking water and reliable and nutritional food sources. But first, what are the issues affecting nutrition and hydration in working equines? 🔸 Inadequate quantity and quality of food: For working equines the amount of food, or the food type consumed is often insufficient in quantity and calorific content. In order to maintain a good body condition, working equids need a combination of carbohydrates and proteins, along with sufficient amounts of fibre to aid digestion. Feed should be stored carefully to avoid contamination from insects or rodents and prevent development of mould. It should be checked for any contaminants that could cause injury or discourage consumption (for example if the food contains stones or sand), before being offered to an animal. To rectify this problem, Brooke works with owners and animal health advisors to ensure they know how to correctly collect and store fodder for their horses, donkeys and mules, and have knowledge on their nutritional requirements. For example teaching that grains such as oats, barley and maize are good for providing additional energy for hard working equines, and that care needs to be taken to avoid the animal receiving too much grain (concentrated feeds) at once. It should instead be distributed over several meals and mixed with high fibre feed such as chaff or sugar beet. 🔸 Environmental conditions and climate change: We have to consider how the environment impacts food production and provision of water. In the countries Brooke works in, droughts are becoming more frequent. Not only does drought force animals and people to travel further in search of water itself, but limited availability can cause strict food rationing. In these instances Brooke teams use innovative ways to help communities source enough food for their animal. For example, the use of Azolla as green fodder for equines in India. Made from aquatic ferns, Azolla requires minimal water for growth but is high in protein. It also requires less space than other crops so can be grown by individual households. Therefore it's an ideal source of food in times of drought. Drought affects water availability. When communities don’t have enough water, their members will take priority over animals for the limited supply that exists, and equines ultimately won’t have enough to drink as they need between 18-35 litres per day, compared to an average of 3.7 litres for a human. To improve water availability and reduce the distances travelled by people and animals to access water, Brooke builds water pumps, wells and boreholes. Brooke has also installed water troughs to allow easy access and provision of water for multiple animals. Stay tuned this week as we share projects that have been successful in improving access to food and water for working equines💧🐴🌽

Dried Hay: Benefits for Animals and Sustainability Introduction: Dried hay bales play a crucial role in animal nutrition, offering advantages beyond mere nutritional content. Explore how this ancient forage preservation method promotes animal health and enhances agricultural sustainability. Benefits for Animals: Dried hay bales are essential for livestock nutrition, preserving key nutrients for gastrointestinal health, weight management, and overall vitality. The drying process ensures long-term forage preservation, eliminating the risk of mold and bacteria contamination, maintaining high food safety standards. Contributions to Sustainable Agriculture: The production of dried hay bales brings sustainability benefits, enabling efficient forage resource management, reducing waste, and ensuring a consistent supply of high-quality feed. The drying process contributes to soil health and encourages more sustainable farming practices. Benefits for Animal and Human Quality of Life: Dried hay bales improve animal quality of life by providing a balanced diet, positively impacting the production of high-quality meat and dairy products. From a human perspective, hay drying promotes agricultural sustainability, ensuring a continuous supply of high-quality food and emphasizing practices that preserve animal and ecosystem health. Conclusions: In conclusion, dried hay bales go beyond being a source of nutrition for animals. They play a crucial role in promoting animal health and creating a sustainable agricultural environment. Encouraging hay drying is fundamental to ensuring animal well-being and contributing to a healthier lifestyle for humanity. Why is healthy food so expensive in America? Blame the Farm Bill that Congress always renews to make burgers cheaper than salad 'Farm Bill programs should be revised to incentivize fruits, vegetables, and other healthy foods and to make them more accessible and affordable.' "Factory farming is capital and resource intensive, and it is inefficient. In the U.S., 10 times more farmland goes to feed farm animals than to feed people, destroying ecosystems and biodiversity, while wasting water and other increasingly scarce resources." #food #health #agriculture

#July2023 was Earth's #hottestmonth on record by a wide margin, and we're not the only ones #sweating in the scorching #heat 🔥🔥🔥 #Dairycows are responding to increased #temperatures with reduced #milkproduction, and hundreds of #cattle which are roaming outdoor lots literally collapsed from the immense heat. As our world #heats up, so should the discussion on actual, tangible #solutions for #innovative #foodproduction #technologies such as #precisionfermentation. These innovations will relieve #animals from our #foodsystems, and us from our reliance on them as a source of our #nutrition 🥛 The brutal temperatures outside are an ongoing reminder of the urgency around this conversation.
