An article recently published on Arxiv and titled "The strain on scientific publishing" presents a very interesting analysis on the inflation in the number of scientific articles being processed and published by all the most important editors: https://lnkd.in/dNV359wg We are talking about 5 millions articles per year over 5k journals. From 2016 to 2022 indexed articles have grown by 47%. Is this something compatible with an impactful research in all fields of science? Personally, I think we need to stop and think about what, as researchers, we are working for. To reverse this awful trend, which in the long term can have a disruptive impact on the capability of human progress, we should start evaluating research careers based on the quality of the results obtained, giving to both reviewers and commissioners the right and responsability to choose within a public, crystal clear peer review process. For a brief summary of the article content, see this on ROARS (in Italian): https://lnkd.in/dtdmsiZc

The Rule of 3's for Scientific Writing simply states that every part of the manuscript should have exactly 3 sets of items, no more, no less. 3 paragraphs in the introduction; 3 sections in the methods; 3 sections/paragraphs in the results; 3 paragraphs in the discussion; 3 limitations; 3 sentences in the conclusion; 3 tables and/or figures; 3(*10) references; 3(*10) words in the title. The 3 paragraphs of the introduction (each between 100-200 words) should answer the questions: “What do we know about this topic” (paragraph 1); “what don’t we know” (paragraph 2); and “How will this paper help us know that which we don’t know” (paragraph 3). The 3 subheadings of the methods section are: Data source (subheading 1), Measures (subheading 2), and Statistical analysis (subheading 3). The 3 subheadings of the results section are: Characteristics of the study population (subheading 1), Bivariate analysis (subheading 2), and Multivariable analysis (subheading 3). The 3 paragraphs of the discussion are: summary of the key findings and their major implications for practice, programs, and policy (paragraph 1); comparison with previous research and explanation of unusual findings (paragraph 2); and overview of strengths and limitations (paragraph 3). Keep the number of limitations to 3. The 3 sentences of the conclusion are: summary of the key findings using simplified language (sentence 1); interpretation of the results in the preceding sentence in terms of what they mean for us (sentence 2); and what specific action we must take based on the findings (sentence 3). The 3 tables could be: Characteristics of the study population (table 1); overall and stratified prevalence or mean estimates for the key outcomes of interest (table 2); and multivariable analysis, such as factors associated with the outcome of interest (table 3). The 30 references should be focused on the most critical references. With few exceptions, try to avoid papers older than 10 years, as science is fairly dynamic, and remember, no citations in the abstract, results, or conclusion. The 30 words of the title are proposed more as an upper limit. Your title should be short, sweet, and straight to the point. Don’t try to be too cute or goofy. Scientific writing is hard; my rule of 3’s is designed to simplify it a bit and give you structure if you are new to writing. If you are already an expert and have a system that works for you, as the saying goes, if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it. The manuscript type is assumed to be a full-length, original research manuscript of 3000-3500 words. The structure may differ for other types of research.

The Dos and Don’ts of Peer Reviewing Guidelines for writing constructive and respectful reviews that foster learning and scientific advancement without discouraging authors. Fair peer review is a necessity for research across all scientific disciplines. Thousands of experts volunteer their time each year to advance scientific understanding and provide feedback to their peers by reviewing manuscripts in AGU’s journals. Whether you are an early-career researcher preparing to review your first manuscript, or a seasoned expert, it is important to understand your role as a reviewer and ensure you provide constructive feedback to authors. When writing your review, always remember to treat others the way they would like to be treated. Managing your tone and considering unconscious biases is paramount to writing a respectful and helpful review. Here, we’ve put together a quick guide on what to include and exclude from your peer review comments. Our authors have a double-blind peer review for their manuscripts during the publishing process with Scientific Route OÜ Full article: https://lnkd.in/ds5W3Cxc #peerreview #scientificpublishing #AGU #EOS #editorialguidelines #reviewerfeedback #ScientificRoute

A new article from me on the past, present and future of science publishing. In this article, I review the history of science publishing, noting that the current peer review process is fairly new and highlighting the rise of journal brands. I go on to describe how journals actually work, as this is often over-simplified by those who wish to reinvent them. Finally, I consider the future of publishing in a world where dissemination precedes peer review, emphasizing the importance of non-peer content verification. https://lnkd.in/evrb7Raf
