Key Questions for women to ask prospective candidates (Part 1): Women's representation in politics and public life Are you committed to making this a misogyny free election, and what action will you take against candidates who express misogyny, including racialised misogyny? How will you ensure that women’s voices are listened to and that policy and legislation truly reflect the needs of women, and that research addresses gaps in data and evidence? Will you commit to 50% female representation in your post-election spokespeople and wider leadership teams? How will you address barriers to women participating in political life, including specific barriers for women of colour, those with caring responsibilities and disabled candidates? #shevotes24 #womenwinelections @SoroptimistSIGBI

🗳️ Empowerment Through Voting: A Call to Action for Women and Businesses Today is the last day to register to vote. Every vote matters, especially as we strive towards gender equality and inclusive decision-making. Inspired by Prof Pankhurst and Centenary Action, businesses and leaders within business are urged to embrace a pivotal role in empowering their workforce through the Promise initiative. This initiative not only encourages colleagues to register but also supports them in voting through flexible working arrangements. A recent poll by Centenary Action revealed that while 76% of women plan to vote, many feel their concerns are overlooked. This underscores the necessity for women, who represent 51% of the population, to be at the forefront of policymaking. Today marks the last day to register before the election. Let's encourage everyone to have a voice. Your involvement can shape the future! #Vote #GenderEquality #InclusiveLeadership #shevotes24 https://lnkd.in/ej6T3NtP

Women for Election are hitting the road (and dirt tracks) again....this time in the Northern Territory! Did you know.... at 33% the Territory is the worst of all states and territories when it comes to female representation in local government? However, the NT is in a much better position when it comes to women’s political representation in parliament, with a female Chief Minister and the state’s Legislative Assembly nearing gender parity. With 5 events scheduled across the Territory, Women for Election continues to focus on lifting diverse representation in our Parliaments and council chambers and broadening the cultural diversity of candidates running for public office. Building a strong pipeline of diverse female candidates is critically important ahead of this year’s Northern Territory election, as well as for future election cycles in the Territory. So, if you’re a woman in the #NorthernTerritory who is interested in understanding more about politics, running for public office one day, or supporting another woman to run, we'd love to see you at one of our workshops! It is a big election year. Sharing a recent report on women's political power thanks to the Center for American Women in Politics. "Achieving gender parity in women’s representation does not necessarily equate to gender parity in women’s political power. Within political institutions, the power to allocate resources, set agendas, and shape culture is distributed unevenly across rank, role, and party. And even when record numbers of women are elected, they contend with slow-to-change norms and structures that have upheld a status quo.." There is still much work to be done to ensure that government better serves ALL people. #democracy #electionyear #womeninpolitics

In 2024, more people will vote in elections around the world than ever before. But an analysis by Jonathan Yerushalmy and Ashifa Kassam in The Guardian finds that women candidates are in short supply. Of the 42 elections – both presidential and parliamentary – in which the country’s leader is being selected and where candidates have been declared, just 18 have women in the running. What's more, the world’s biggest democracies – the US, Indonesia, and India – have no women frontrunners. In a study with colleagues at Stanford, we found that a barrier for women politicians is what we call "pragmatic bias", or when voters prefer a woman candidate, but don't vote for her because they're concerned others won't vote for her making it too difficult for her to win. UN Women predicts that at the current rate, gender equality in the highest positions of power will not be reached for another 130 years. #womenpoliticians #genderbias
