Norfolk company Structure-flex's high-tech flood defence system sees a surge in demand with European fire brigades placing substantial orders. The German-engineered system, consisting of flexible water-filled tubes, offers a versatile physical barrier against floodwaters up to 3.5m high. Amid increased flood risks, family-owned Structure-flex, a thermoplastic specialists based in Cromer, have ramped up production to meet demand. Managing Director Paul Reeve emphasises the importance of proactive flood defence measures, “The weather over the winter has again demonstrated that flooding is a more frequent risk than ever." February 13th marks one year since Cyclone Gabrielle devastated the Hawke’s Bay region. Prime Pump was on the ground in Napier and Gisborne working with freight companies, the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council and Civil Defense to get pumps, hoses and accessories to the region. The immediate task was to move flood waters back into the river, and to clear the damaged stormwater network so that civil works crews could bring the pump stations back online. Four things stood out for us during that time: 1. The scale of the devastation - fertile land destroyed, peoples’ lives uprooted, homes and businesses gone. 2. People pitching in – staff at all levels got stuck in, suppliers, freight staff, and customers came together to move gear quickly from our branches into the Hawke’s Bay. 3. Staff dedication – the team worked around the clock to keep the 36 flood relief pumps tuned and fueled. Three staff temporarily relocated to Napier to support the clean up. 4. Local support - the gratitude of the locals despite their environment, and the humbling experience of working with dedicated crews from the Council Works Group and other contractors to restore key infrastructure. While the initial clean-up is complete, future proofing the Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne against severe-weather events like Gabrielle is ongoing. With a newly-opened branch in Onekawa, Napier Prime Pump in committed to stormwater management efforts in the region. Cherry Creek Spring Flush, Trail Detours, And Dam Safety Event The Cherry Creek Regional Trail between Iliff Ave. and Wabash St. in unincorporated Arapahoe County (zip 80231) will be temporarily closed on Wednesday, May 22, as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans to flush sediment out of Cherry Creek Reservoir. Due to flood hazards, the flush will have trail impacts spanning the entire Cherry Creek Regional Trail, including through the City and County of Denver to downtown Denver. Trail users please stay out of closed areas due to high water warnings during the flush. A reminder: when a trail is flooded, turn around, don’t drown. Trail users are encouraged to follow onsite trail signage and use detour route. Parts of the trail may be closed for a day or more for cleanup and will be unsafe due to mud, sand and debris on the trail. Want to learn more about dam safety and preparedness?
