A long-term client engaged Apex to assist with a stormwater emergency response due to a sudden collapse onsite. The southern side of the employee entrance roadway faced a significant slope failure caused by an outfall pipe deteriorating approximately 20 feet below the roadway. This situation posed immediate safety risks for vehicular traffic, as the roadway serves as the primary access route for all employees. The project was addressed in four phases. In Phase 1, temporary best management practices were used to control water runoff and prevent further erosion. Phase 2 involved sliplining the pipe as a temporary solution while we conducted further investigations of the surrounding soils. An engineered plan for permanent repairs was issued. Phase 3 initiated permanent repairs, which included boring a new 60” RCP pipe under the roadway parallel to the existing outfall pipe and abandoning the old pipe. Finally, in Phase 4, soil enhancements were implemented via compaction grouting to the roadway within 100 linear feet of the abandoned and new outfall pipes. This comprehensive project addressed slope failure, outfall pipe deterioration, and safety concerns, ensuring the continued functionality of the employee entrance roadway. #ApexCompanies #Stormwater #Texas Abby Stanley Edward Coleman

It is the final week of our Summer Stormwater Corrective Series! Stormwater systems are engineered devices and each system component contributes to the design function, such as stormwater pipes, risers, inlets, and outlets. Non-compliant system components can lead to major issues like flooding, sinkholes, and even complete system failures. This week's project highlights work on a variety of system components and required an extensive skill-set to complete. THE Exposed Pipeline Remediation Experts Cajon Deadman Washout Case Study – In our latest case study, discover how Submar protected a 14 inch products pipeline that was exposed for 60 feet and suspended at a height of 17 feet due to lateral migration at Cajon Deadman Washout in San Bernardino County, California. The eroded bank of the riverbed was graded and built up with a compactable fill material. The pipeline was exposed, inspected, and recoated. Geotextile fabric and Pyramat 75 Turf Reinforcement Mat (TRM) were installed to stabilize the steep sloped riverbank. Rip rap was installed along the toe of the riverbank to prevent future scour. During the second month after project completion, the site experienced an 11 inch rainfall in a 24 hour period, which resembled a 370-year storm. After this severe storm, the riverbank was intact and in stable condition as depicted. Case Study The city of Marathon in the Florida Keys completed a $27 million sewer, stormwater, and road-paving project. This project involved sewering the entire city, providing stormwater treatment to all city rights of way, and overlaying every city street. In that project, the Snout, an oil and debris separator from Best Management Products, was used in 940 inlet structures. The city was incorporated in 1999, and eventually the need arose for a retrofitted stormwater system for more than 500 acres of rights of way and public and private land that had been developed but had no previous stormwater treatment. “One of the biggest challenges in the Keys is the high groundwater table,” notes Michael Giardullo, P.E., LEED AP, director of civil engineering for Weiler. “The other is the discharge right into the ocean. It’s a national marine sanctuary. There are a lot of rules about direct discharge or even discharge after detention.” Marathon’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit mandated the provision of advanced wastewater treatment. The city chose a vacuum sewer collection system to provide central sewer service to all properties. The Snouts trap floatable and settleable contaminants in the catch basins, which are routinely vacuum-cleaned by maintenance staff, rather than allowing them to the exfiltration piping. The Snouts capture of 50% of fine solids, 95% of floatables, and 50% of hydrocarbons.
