Introduction to our research! Our project aimed to uncover the challenges aspiring leaders face in HEIs and the barriers to their leadership ambitions. Here's how we did it: 🔍 Research Approach: ·      Conducted a comprehensive literature review on EDI in European HEIs. ·      Carried out 56 in-depth interviews across 18 HEIs in 10 countries, including Austria, France, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, the Netherlands, Sweden, Australia, the UK, and the USA. 👥 Who We Interviewed: 25 Current Leaders (e.g., Rectors, Vice-Rectors) 14 Aspiring Leaders from under-represented groups 17 Stakeholders in relevant industries 📊 Framework Highlights: Identified societal and institutional barriers to EDI. Explored challenges in recruitment, retention, and promotion for aspiring leaders. Showcased effective support mechanisms for overcoming these barriers. Excited to present at #icpel24 on 7/30/24 at 11:00AM. The title of my virtual presentation is: Educational Leadership Development through Arts-based Professional Learning The utilization of arts-based professional learning to enhance leadership behaviors has been investigated in such fields as business and healthcare, however, its impact on educational leadership is not well understood. This study investigated the nature of arts-based approaches to leadership development experienced by public school principals in a Midwestern state. Employing a qualitative approach predicated on semi-structured interviews, the principals also provided their perceptions of the benefits of engaging with the arts to bolster their leadership capabilities. Working with the assumption that engaging with myriad arts in professional development settings impacts often ignored leadership behaviors, a constant comparative analysis yielded both expected and unexpected findings. Furthermore, these principals all utilized the arts in developing their teachers and in improving classroom and school outcomes.

6 years ago, I went to google in search of Leadership Conferences to speak at. I hadn’t even used a microphone before and had no business reaching out to these big events. I did anyways. No talent, no experience, no credibility, I reached out to some of the biggest conferences in the US with the delusional hope that they would respond. With almost every email, I was ghosted. The few that responded told me that I wasn’t a good fit. I didn’t mind. I knew I was on my way to becoming a ‘good fit.’ When I started doing my research, Leadership Safari at @cmuniversity was one of the first events I found. I watched every one of their videos and it quickly became a dream of mine to be a part of it. I excitedly emailed them and to no surprise, never heard back. I hadn’t earned the opportunity to do such an amazing event ‘YET’ so I just kept it moving. I knew that my differentiator was that I was willing to speak ANYWHERE to ANYONE. Groups of 5 turned into classrooms, which turned into gyms, which turned into auditoriums, which turned into convention centers and arenas. Fast forward to this past week, I had the honor of keynoting the 2023 Leadership Safari and got to show them this email. Such a full circle moment. THE POINT: what you want is typically past the point where most people quit. Most people give up right before things were going to come together. If you’re trying to make something happen (no matter how insane it may seem) don’t stop. The only way to guarantee failure is to quit. Keep going. Trust the process. Life will reward you for it.

Break barriers and build bridges. To be honest, in life, there is always some barrier that tries to block your path to success. For people from diverse backgrounds operating in Corporate America, these barriers can lead you to question your self-identity and to act inauthentically. The good thing is that you don't have to face these barriers alone. Build bridges.
