Part I What is Hospitality Experience? Are you looking for a career that’s exciting, rewarding and offers plenty of opportunities to progress? Whether you’re looking to kick-start your future or considering making a career switch, hospitality is a vibrant and interesting industry. Management is the first step towards a rewarding career in hospitality, it’s never too early to start learning about the industry and the importance of delivering an outstanding hospitality experience. What is hospitality? The word “hospitality” derives from the Latin “hospes”, meaning “visitor”, “guest” or “stranger”. It’s used to describe being welcoming and friendly to visitors or guests. Today, hospitality is a global industry and one of the world’s largest employers. Hospitality, however, shouldn’t be confused with customer service. Hospitality focuses on making customers feel welcome, comfortable and happy, while customer service is about meeting customers’ needs and helping them solve problems. From Hospitality to Retail: Reflecting on What I Miss 🌟 As I transition back into the retail world, I find myself reflecting on my time in the hospitality industry. What I miss most isn’t just the daily tasks but the deeper connection with guests and the sense of fulfillment that came from creating memorable experiences. 🏨💫 In hospitality, it’s the little things—like personal touches, a warm welcome, and the joy of seeing a guest’s day made—that truly mattered. I’ve come to appreciate how much those moments contribute to a positive and meaningful work environment. While retail has its own set of rewards and challenges, I carry with me the lessons learned from hospitality. I look forward to finding ways to bring that same level of care and enthusiasm into my new role. What do you miss from your previous roles, and how do you incorporate those experiences into your current work?#CareerTransition #Hospitality #Retail #GuestExperience #CareerReflections #ProfessionalGrowth

August 2023 will mark 2 years of me working with Fortune pearl hotel as the general manager and one question I’m often asked is, how on God’s good earth I landed here after completing my bachelors in computer science, though i have successfully managed other hotels. Although, it’s destiny which has taken its due course, the more I do well in my present work, the more I am grateful for the learnings I acquired during my hotel management days. So, I thought of penning my thoughts; 1. HARD WORK: If there is one word which defines Hotel Industry, it is hard work. I never shied away from bending my back and working hard. That’s what hotel management has taught me - no matter what, work hard, put in those long hours and someday all those long hours and hard work will pay off. 2. CUSTOMER SERVICE: - Customer service is synonymous with Hotel Industry, so much so, that a customer is referred to as guest in it. 3. NO WORK IS SMALL: - Hotel industry is very glamorous, but not for us, it’s glamorous only for the guest”.The only advice I give millennial's is , grab every opportunity available to serve your customer and do it well! You never know which door it might open and to where it might lead you. 4. CREATIVITY: Who knows creativity better than a manager? who works hard, researches different strategies in boosting sales! A manager never stops learning or bringing his creativity to the table. And so, whatever I do, I try to be creative with it. I try something different all the time, even if it is as simple as replying to an email. One must work consciously to be creative in managerial field. Sometimes you could learn ‘how to be creative' through trainings or sometimes through your own experience, but you should never stop to be different and creative. 5. CROSS FUNCTIONAL COLLABORATION: - Collaboration is a buzz word in hospitality sector. But for me, true collaboration is, Cross functional. If you are a finance guy, working with different finance teams, you are merely doing your job or at best collaborating vertically. Collaboration must be horizontal; it must be cross functional. If we can learn to collaborate horizontally, it will improve our networking and accelerate our career. 6. ON GROUND PRESENCE: A manager does not know what’s happening in his surroundings by sitting in his cozy office. We often get up from our chairs or move around. We talk to people on calls despite them being at the same location. I often, walk around the floor, where work is taking shape, to be with teams and talk to individuals who are executing the task. 7. HAVING FUN: Despite the long working and demanding hours, a hotelier has fun, does not crib about the long days, lives his/her passion. Long hours don’t disturb me, they don’t challenge me anymore, I try to have fun in everything I do. A few may disagree and some may agree to these views. This is an honest attempt and my personal view only. Will be happy to hear your views. Thank you

In the dynamic world of hospitality, nurturing a successful career is a journey filled with exciting opportunities and myriad experiences. The path often starts at the ground level, with roles such as a Front Desk Agent, Concierge, or Food and Beverage Assistant. These entry-level positions provide a comprehensive understanding of the industry and essential customer service skills. Taking a step forward, one can explore roles like Event Planner or Guest Services Supervisor, blending strategic thinking, organization, and people management. The learnings from these roles can be instrumental when aiming for the coveted position of a Hospitality Manager. Remember, in this industry, experience is an invaluable asset. The journey from entry-level to management is not just about titles; it's about acquiring diverse skills, honing your service mindset, and understanding every facet of the hospitality world.
