Don't buy into the Prop 47 fear! Kent Mendoza, ARC's Associate Director of Local Policy, captures the transformative impact of Prop 47 in the Guardian: “It’s one of those monumental pieces of legislation, and it got us over the hill for something we’ve been fighting for for so long. It gives counties an opportunity to be bold and approach these things differently. This is what allows us to maybe save 10 people who wouldn’t have this support.” https://lnkd.in/giPxt4Vw

Don't fall for the fear mongering. I used to practice law in Kansas. You know what the felony theft threshold is in that "Red" state? $1,000. You know what most of my clients were struggling with? Poverty. Prop 47 brought California's threshold for felony theft in line with the majority of American states. Only 10 states in America have thresholds that are less than $1,000, including California. Reducing theft and other property crimes requires us to come together to address root causes. Repealing Prop 47 will not do that. But it will increase mass incarceration and the cycle of generational poverty that can result. #Prop47 #factsoverfear #carenotcages #criminaljusticereform #retailtheft #humancapital

Troy Thomas was positioned to advise the Legislature to reject Ordinance 5732 Adopted May 1, 2023. I asked for 10% of their annual salaries as a whistleblower. Leading the RoboNDIS campaign. Seeking change and justice for people harmed by bad behaviour in the NDIS, Please see my "About" and accept my connection requests.
On a dreary, damp Sunday in South Gippsland, what else does one do but dip into the mired world of #American #Politics. The body of this article is a #masterpiece letter, written by the Fulton County District Attorney to a Republican Congressman who sought to exert political influence in the legal system. On the surface, it has nothing to do with #RoboNDIS, or #RoboDebt. But, it has a huge amount to do with politicians behaving badly. We have different tools. The Americans have #GrandJuries. We have #RoyalCommissions. When the probability of laws being broken needs investigation, the Americans, through their courts, convene a #GrandJury, independent of the politics. When the probability of laws being broken in Australia, we have to rely on the politicians to convene the #RoyalCommisison. We have the option of a #Petition to Parliament to ask the politicians to act, but it remains that only the politicians can do this. The #RoboDebt Royal Commission demonstrated that many people, including politicians, behaved badly. Many people involved in #RoboDebt were also involved in #RoboNDIS. No doubt, other actors were also involved. We need to know who was involved, and how they were involved. We need to know what laws may have been broken (or just slightly bent - it's the same thing in the end). We need transparency, accountability and just compensation. That's why, through our personal ups and downs, we will continue to campaign for the politicians to be on the right side of history, and convene the #RoboNDIS Royal Commission. Let's all hold our horses and realize a legislative audit in Arkansas doesn't always mean what you may think. In Jefferson County, a lot more than $19,000 can be spent with few repercussions and documented in an audit. Then what? #politics #politicsandlaw
