Sad news of Harald zur Hausen's death. His work revolutionised our understanding of how viruses contribute to human cancer. He originally worked on EBV then went on to discover that certain types of HPV cause cervical cancer as well as other anogenital tumours. More recent work has shown that HPV is also responsible for some forms of head and neck cancer and possibly oesophageal cancer. Harald's work eventually led to the development of HPV vaccines which are now preventing cervical cancer. ...Forbion initially closed its late-stage fund in June at €470 million before reaching the hard cap on the fund at €600 million. Known as the Forbion Growth Opportunities Fund, the raise was Forbion’s second late-stage specific fund. With the money, Forbion plans to invest up to €70 million per deal, and Forbion managing partner and co-founder Sander Slootweg said the firm plans to invest in 12 to 15 companies via that fund.
