As someone who has Individualization in my Top 5 CliftonStrengths, I've always been fascinated by the unique qualities that set each person apart. This strength has been a cornerstone in my athletic coaching career and a key driver in my collaborative work across all employment opportunities. By recognizing and leveraging the unique strengths of each team member, we create a more dynamic, effective, and harmonious environment. Whether in the gym, on the field, or in the office, understanding and valuing individual differences not only boosts performance but also fosters a culture of appreciation and mutual respect. In leadership roles, it’s essential to shape performance conversations around what each team member does best and where they excel. When planning future projects, considering each person's unique contributions helps ensure success. Learning how each team member likes to be recognized and making them feel valued in a way that resonates most with them is crucial. Personalization is key. I find individual human beings absolutely FASCINATING… for me, getting to the heart of what drives them is like solving the most satisfying puzzle. Then the bonus round is how you help them do it more and even better. Groups of people don’t do it for me in the same way. Too much yapping and “aligning”. Not enough unique perspectives. I used to think that this was just me being an introvert. Then I did my CliftonStrengths assessment and wouldn’t you know it - Individualisation is my #2. And like many of my clients who take the test, it wasn’t an aha moment of great insight into myself. More of a feeling of… oh. So not everyone thinks like that?! What I’m saying is: 1️⃣Individualisation is a strength that can transform the people around you. If you recognise the description, or you know you have it, use it. 2️⃣I guess some people actually enjoy yapping and “aligning”. Who knew?

Individualization is a powerful strength, especially when combined with your other talents. Many clients are surprised or disappointed when they don’t see empathy or other relationship-building strengths in their top 5 or 10. However, when Individualization is present, it can bring out the characteristics they seek in those "missing" relationship building strengths. This strength allows you to see the uniqueness in others and, when paired with sharp strategic, influencing, or executing strengths, it becomes a force for powerful leadership. Leaders with high Individualization have the unique ability to make others feel seen and heard. So much about this post resonates with me. Not just because individualization is one of my top 5 Strengths...also because it’s about seeing each person’s unique strengths and helping them leverage them. “Shape performance conversations around what each team member does best.”  That approach is what I also carry into leadership coaching – help people understand more deeply what their strengths are, how those strengths make them the leader they are, and what leveraging those strengths could look like for their future leadership. Sometimes people and organizations see leadership coaching as a way to “fix” something about a person versus viewing coaching as a way to help someone identify their strengths and how to use them effectively to become an even stronger leader. The other day I heard someone say to a colleague, “Of course YOU don’t need coaching.” Hmmm. I disagree. We ALL can benefit from coaching. From having someone hold space for us to help us see deeper into what is most important to us and what we have to offer. To hold a mirror up to the unique individual we are and help us see perceived challenges through the lens of our strengths. #leadershipcoaching #strengthsbased #individualization #cliftonstrengths
