#Transition: "I've learned the value of embracing uncertainty. Enter these moments with radical openHEARTedness.
Leave room for some of those plans to change.
Be excited about the fact that you will encounter possibilities you haven't even imagined.
Be willing to let what you learn shift your thinking.
Build a web of deserved trust...We need each other.
It is #community that rebuilds things!
#Together is how you'll make the broken things whole again." Melinda French Gates at Stanford University#InspiredByYou#OnRepeat
+From "Charlotte's Web":
"'I am a little tired, perhaps. But I feel peaceful. Your success in the ring this morning was, to a small degree, my success.
Your future is assured...
All of these sights and sounds and smells will be yours to enjoy.'
Charlotte stopped.
'Oh Charlotte, to think that when I first met you I thought you were cruel and bloodthirsty!
Why did you do all this for me?' He asked. 'I don't deserve it. I've never done anything for you.'
'You have been my friend,' replied Charlotte."

“Togetherness allows us to share ideas, collaborate on projects, and brainstorm solutions to difficult problems.
Our strengths are amplified when we combine them with the strengths of others. We can become better communicators, thinkers, and problem solvers when we learn to #work together.
Togetherness also helps us develop a sense of community and connectedness. We can connect with others on a deeper level and build #relationships that will last a lifetime.
When we come together and share experiences, we gain #empathy and understanding for one another. This helps us better understand the world around us and how our actions can #impact others.
Ultimately, togetherness gives us the strength and support we need to succeed. It allows us to come together and accomplish great things that would otherwise be impossible.” Bryce P. Yesterday, I got to watch my youngest Phoebe Gates graduate from Stanford University—the university that gave my dad a scholarship to study mechanical engineering back in the 1960s. I also had the honor of giving Stanford’s commencement speech, which was pretty fun. 😊 And while these amazing graduates already have everything they need inside of them to make their mark on the world, I offered them three pieces of advice on embracing life’s transitions. The modern economic system is a market economy, which is a capitalist economy where people, not the government--NOT THE GOVERNMENT--own most businesses. In a capitalist economy, prices allocate capital and labor between competing uses, and capital assets can be privately owned and controlled.

I always emphasize the importance of reading commencement addresses. In just a few minutes, they can impart the essence of a lifetime's learning from those who've achieved great things. Melinda French Gates' 2024 Stanford address resonated deeply with me, especially her perspective on optimism, hope, and navigating life's twists and turns.
Her definition of true optimism as an "active conviction to make things better" struck a chord. We often think of optimism as just a sunny outlook, but Gates emphasizes the crucial role of action. It's about actively driving positive change, even when faced with adversity. This feels far more empowering and impactful.
The metaphor of the "small wave" guiding the "big wave" during life's turbulent moments was fantastic. Seeking out wise voices with different perspectives is such valuable advice, especially for young graduates entering a constantly evolving world. Those insightful mentors and fresh viewpoints are crucial for navigating major life shifts.
Her call for "radical openheartedness" in the face of change, rather than fear or resistance, is profound. Openness fosters adaptability, growth, and the ability to discover new paths. In our rapidly changing world, that willingness to embrace change is more important than ever.
Gates reframes optimism, not as blind positivity, but as something rooted in wisdom, trust, strong communities, and a solutions-oriented mindset. It's an inspiring perspective – optimism flows from our ability to create positive change through openness, wise guidance, and collective effort.
I found her articulation of these core principles – openheartedness, seeking wisdom, optimism through action, and the importance of trust – to be incredibly insightful and motivating. These principles, deeper than just knowledge, provide the wisdom needed to approach life's transitions with hope, resilience, and a drive for positive impact. A truly valuable commencement message.
Gates offered a refreshing perspective on true optimism, moving beyond mere positive thinking. Her life principles encourage graduates to be open-minded change-makers guided by wisdom – an empowering approach as they venture into an unpredictable world. It's an effective and fine take on nurturing an optimistic, solutions-focused approach to life's challenges.

What a motivating few days of technology sharing with some of the best EM colleagues and Stanford professors! We talked about key technology opportunities (not challenges!) and the importance of scale. I’ve mentioned this before and will continue to emphasize, we are better when we work together!!
My first visit to the beautiful Stanford campus! It was great to hear about the exciting research going on at Stanford and to make new connections with faculty and students. Thanks to my colleague Hector Ayala for giving me a campus tour of his alma mater and to Steve Levine and Stanford for the invitation to participate.
