Day 5: #10DaysOfConsulting - The Cornerstone of Ethical and Professional Conduct Welcome to Day 5 of '10 Days of Consulting,' where we explore the fundamental quality of ethical and professional conduct in the world of consulting. It is the cornerstone of our integrity and reputation. Case: Upholding Ethical Standards in the Face of Bribery. Client Challenge: A client, facing a critical regulatory review, desperately seeks a favorable report that would overlook certain compliance violations. To achieve this, the client offers a substantial bribe to the consultant assuring more jobs at favourable conditions. The Ethical Dilemma: Faced with a significant financial incentive, the consultant finds himself at a crossroads. However, he recognizes that accepting the bribe would compromise his ethical and professional conduct. The Consultant's Choice: In an unwavering display of ethical behavior, the consultant refuses the client’s offer. He makes it clear that his commitment to the highest standards of integrity is non-negotiable. The Consultant must then decide whether that engagement should even continue based on the ethical makeup of the client. Maintaining Integrity: The consultant continues to work diligently on the client's case, following all regulatory standards and guidelines to the letter. He provides a comprehensive and unbiased report, despite the client's initial request. End Results: The consultant crosses a difficult milestone, refusing an offer of confirmed continued business in these challenging times. The client ultimately realizes that the consultant's commitment to ethics and professionalism is unwavering. While the report does not provide the desired outcome, it reinforces trust in the consultant's integrity. This also forces the client to make required improvements according to the regulatory needs. This case exemplifies the triumph of ethical and professional conduct in the world of consulting. It underscores that maintaining the highest standards of integrity is not just an ideal but a commitment that can withstand even the most challenging ethical dilemmas. Share your thoughts on ethical conduct in consulting and how you have upheld it in your work. Join the conversation, and stay tuned for exploration of another vital quality in the consulting world! (we will take the weekend break!). #10daysofconsulting #managementconsultancy #resilience #operationalresilience #organizationalresilience

The conversations about Consultants, Contractors, and the APS are long overdue. But they’re currently centred around making one party or another ‘wrong’ rather than addressing the true issues of integrity, ethics, and the environments required for those things to occur. As someone who has been a long term public servant and a consultant for different companies, I have a perspective that, while not unique, does provide a broader view of what does and doesn’t happen in the relationships between external advisors and government. As a government employee you are negotiating a balance between accountability and responsibility - ensuring that it stays at the right level. You’re also measured on output (both real and perceived). Even though the conversation is often about outcome, the result rarely reflects the desired changes. As a consultant you are primarily concerned with outcome and problem solving within a complex environment (unless your contract specifies outputs) - you’re negotiating a balance between what you understand about broader applications of those solutions in the industry against what’s possible within a government framework and environment. Even though you know what’s possible and will work as hard as you can to deliver it, there are numerous internal obstacles that you cannot surmount, but only negotiate and compromise around fairly . This is the truth of workers who genuinely want to make a difference in this arena. The flip side to this scenario is when the conversation and focus in Government turns to politics and when the conversation and focus in consultancies turns to profit. There are fundamental truths about humans that will persist beyond and through every possible framework, mitigation strategy, and ethical inquiry: power and greed. These will invade every decision, every action, and every strategy. I don’t know what the answer is, but I know what I hope happens from here: 1. That the authorities of organisations and the country continue to probe the ethical actions of both its government and the private consulting companies it employs 2. That people witnessing unethical behaviour are encouraged to speak out and supported against adverse personal and professional outcomes as a result 3. That we continually evolve our ways of working to hold the vision of desired outcomes and weighing the impact of that result against true human outcomes We have already started to uncover the challenges and the very real integrity issues that exist in both arenas. Let’s ensure we don’t make quick decisions with broad statements of guilt and culpability (beyond the identified individuals), but rather embrace the transparency this is giving us to make better choices and to be strategic about how we leverage all perspectives in pursuit of an outcome. More importantly, let this remind us of our collective desire to keep our leadership in all arenas as clean and ethical as possible. And remember, it starts with you.

Conflict of Values Let us take real examples from life. You need to go to your office on weekend to collect a document. As you enter the office, you hear sounds in the next room. Two of your employees were having great loving time. You decided to leave the office to think over what to do with your two employees. If you fire them, you have to explain why. I you ignore what you witnessed then this is not in terms of work ethics. You have two bitter options. What would you decide? You haves housekeeper who stole money to buy medicine for her ailing son. She has been honest for years but stealing once may encourage her to steal more frequently until it becomes a habit. If you decide to report her theft, no one would employ her. She needed the money not to starve. Conflict of ethics or having an ethics dilemma is a challenge on what to decide. What you do in such cases? #ethics #values #ethicsdilemma #conflict #decision

Want your organisation to be compliant or ethical? Then don't engage in wishful thinking... Very often, Compliance processes are designed from the perspective of teh people designing them. We know why a particular rule or process is important because it's our job to know. But the average employee has other things on their mind and things that are obvious to us, might not be to them. So, when we're designing processes — whether that's training, or policies or controls — we need to put ourselves in their shoes. Not theoretically what they ought to do or think, but what they are actually, in reality, likely to think. If we do that, we can make it more likely they'll do the things we want them to and not do the things we don't You can find out more about how to do that in my book '𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀: 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝘀 & 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲'. Published by Wiley, it's available in all good bookstores, and you can read the first few chapters for free at www.humanizingrules.com. #Ethics #Compliance #BehaviouralScience #BehavioralScience

📉 Your employees don't perform enough? Leveling up your workplace culture might help! When you focus on behaviors, attitudes, and relationships within the organization, you lay the foundation for a more ethical and productive work environment. Here's how you can improve ethical standards and behaviors in your business: - Listen to your employees - Inspire the right behaviors - Prioritize quality over profit - Raise awareness of ethical issues - Address changes in the workplace - Encourage a culture of speaking up - Reflects the organization's culture and brand - Make decisive choices when ethics and profits collide These actions can lead to employees being more focused on their responsibilities, resulting in fairer interactions with colleagues and clients. They also help prevent violations of company codes, maintain a positive work environment, and enhance professionalism.👌 And since everyone might have to handle ethical issues, it's important that everybody, from leaders to managers and employees, is trained in ethics and code of conduct. That way, people are more open-minded and receptive to each other. 💙 Serapy offers tailor-made, online, and gamified training modules based on real-life, expert-verified cases. 👉 Get your demo at Serapy.ch.
