I’m optimistic about the future for journalism in the age of AI. I spoke about this at the Deloitte and Enders Media and Telecoms conference in London this week. ‘In the run up to a general election do we really need news brands in the age of AI’? Is there any more important component in a democratic process than the free press holding those in power to account? No bot or AI can ever replicate or replace human journalists and the trusted content they create. Is there ever a more important moment than an election to get behind the soundbites, to try to understand what’s really going on - no matter what your political leaning. Of course, this trusted content can be disseminated and amplified across a myriad of digital platforms and embracing the opportunities that emerge as this tech develops is exciting, but the economics have to work too. The pace of change in this emerging tech landscape is breathtaking, but I believe the opportunities that lie ahead for our sector are vast. I was on the board of Universal Music Group and I saw how the music industry dealt with tech platforms and the need to pay for intellectual property. The recent TikTok vs UMG case was a great example of this. Universal pulled the rights to use its artists' songs on the platform. TikTok is now paying. The music is back on the platform. The argument that this was about developing fan engagement didn’t fly. The same can be said for displaying news content in exchange for clicks. The economics don’t work. AI platforms will eventually have little choice but to reach a consensus with media companies. P.S. it was wonderful to be on a panel with my industry colleagues and even more pleasing that 60% of the line up was female!
Appreciate your perspective Anna. However, as someone who is building in the AI space, I'd like to add that we nee AI-human integration in all fields. Human vs AI is the wrong notion.
Love this x
"No bot or AI can ever replicate or replace human journalists and the trusted content they create." Well said Anna Jones 🙌🙌🙌
Your optimism about journalism in the AI age is inspiring. Human journalists remain irreplaceable in holding power to account. Kudos on the gender-balanced panel!
Anna Jones Thanks for sharing
It's great to see a gender balanced panel, and we hope to see more of this in all sectors across minorities too. It seems like most people value the first impression, as much as the content itself.
