Anna Lerner Nesbitt’s Post

⛰️I just landed in Europe and was met by some GREAT news. 🗞️ Remember the European nature restoration law? 🌱 The one that was drafted by the Commission, approved by the Parliament, endorsed by 6000 scientists and callled ‘critical for competitiveness, food security and biodiversity’ by hundreds of influential business leaders from Europe - but then not adopted by the Council last minute? ✨ Well, it’s still alive. We just learned that it will be voted on this coming Monday. 🌱 Please help me make some noise to get the members of the European Council to understand how important it is to safeguard nature. 👩🌾 Let’s remind them that this is a law that will put farmers in the driving seat for more sustainable land management , healthier local food, and a path to a continuation of spring flowers, buzzing bees, wildlife habitat and protected ecosystems. 📣 Share this post, take to the streets, call your representative, activate youth, whatever it takes - we need this law to safeguard biodiversity tipping points, and our collective future. Another great set of points from The Landbanking Group : ⏳ The clock is ticking. 6,000 scientists called the #EUNatureRestorationLaw the most important law of our generation. At the final approval stage, EU politicians dropped it from the agenda. We have until June 17 to change their minds. ✋ More than 80% of the EU's environment is in a bad state. The EU Nature Restoration Law is our chance to reverse this, but it desperately needs your support. We have until next EU environment minister meeting on June 17th to urge politicians in particular in Poland, Austria, Belgium, Finland, Hungary and Sweden to take a stand. If 1-2 of them adopt the law will come into force EU-wide. Passing the law is crucial: It would mean restoring 20% of the EU's land and marine areas by 2030 and fully so by 2050. The good news is: public opinion is on nature’s side, and so are scientists. The majority of citizens in believe the law should be adopted e.g.  🇭🇺 Hungary (83%), and 🇵🇱 Poland (72%)

BACKGROUND INFORMATION - WHAT THIS IS ABOUT: After 2 years of negotiations, the EU was set to approve a first of its kind Nature Restoration Law, shortly after being endorsed by the European Parliament (Feb, 2024). Hours before the vote, the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU was unsuccessful in getting the votes needed from EU Member States to approve the Law. (March, 2024). This is unprecedented for a law that has been fully negotiated. There is still hope. The Belgian presidency is still trying to mobilize a vote, and a few politicians e.g. in Austria, Belgium and Poland can sway the majority to approve the law.

Great news - let’s hope (a) it survives the vote and (b) it was not watered down too much…
