I have heard many clichés about data over the years: data is the new oil; data is the new water; data is like electricity; and, more. Each of these rings true, in a way, but I have always felt like something was missing. One phrase that has grown on me recently: Data is the silent storyteller. That rings so true, in my opinion, in cyber. Trillions of data points that show patterns, behavior, and motivations. Untold stories that defenders need to surface to protect our digital systems. In last week’s Afternoon Cyber Tea, my special guests and colleagues Shawn Bice and Rohan Kumar discussed how we unleash those cyber stories. They both shared perspective on the future of data and AI in cybersecurity, and the platforms and systems we need to build even stronger defenses. I am sharing thoughts from our CTO Dean Fantham after he participated in Microsoft Envision this week and Satya was there. Here they are... “I was at the MS Envision event in London and spoke on a panel about AI and Cyber. Satya Nadella flew in and gave a session at the end of the day. The effects and transformation that will come from AI will be large, at scale, and happening fast. Companies that are not cloud first, with modern security controls and architectures will miss this or worse try and do this and create risks and unintended disclosures of PII or AI driven use cases that are running on unknown or poisoned data. Data Governance and protection is paramount now as petabytes of unstructured data that companies have will form the basis of many of the AI use cases. We need to help companies get the risk, understanding, classification , protection, and availability of that data and the users that have access to it understood and controlled. The effects of ransomware, breaches, and data poisoning in an AI world will be more profound than today.” This is a new imperative on identity and security initiatives. Dean is a visionary. I'll share more soon.
