I helped a client recently on a search for a fully remote, managerial level accounting role. Here’s what I experienced: Over 250 applicants in 48 hours. I looked at every resume. More than half didn’t possess the minimum qualifications to be considered for the role. About 25% of the applicants had no relatable experience on their resume (ZERO accounting experience and this was a management level role). With over 250 applicants, and counting, I needed SOMETHING to warrant calling a candidate. Of the folks that I spoke to, at least 25% shared the resume they applied with was not up to date. About 20% of the folks who were qualified far exceeded the qualifications. Every single one shared they were targeting a salary significantly higher than what was listed in the job posting. In clarifying compensation, they hoped they’d be able to obtain a rate higher than the posting listed. And I will note, we’re talking $20-$60K more than the top range. This was not an option nor in the budget. I’m a big proponent of giving people the opportunity to share their story, not basing every decision on a resume, and having conversations to explore match. However, a resume IS STILL YOUR KEY to the opportunity to do that! TA is flooded with applicants but can’t find the right person. There are endless people job seeking and not hearing back from any applicants. How can this be? VOLUME. My clients are sharing they have hundreds of applicants, but few align with what they’re looking for. I read endless posts on LinkedIn that job seekers are frustrated about not hearing back on their applications. There is a lot of noise both on the hiring side and on the applicant side. Automation is making things far easier to apply and to review, but it doesn't seem to be helping companies find talent or candidates land jobs. Let's give grace to both parties – hiring managers & job seekers. Let's be thoughtful in the roles we apply to. I understand you may be interested in the role, but are you qualified for the role? I’m not asking for 4/5 qualifications here. I encourage people to apply to stretch roles! But do you have relatable experience? At least some of the qualifications? It's highly unlikely that your ongoing bookkeeping experience for your Dad’s $100k/year revenue company would qualify you to be the Corporate Controller of a $500M business when that is all the accounting experience you have. Let’s all agree that more noise doesn’t help anyone and to do our part, yes? Or as we say here in Minnesota, “Oh yeah you betcha?” 😉 “Oh fer sure.”
