ADAPTATION OF IP IN THE GAMES INDUSTRY: ANGRY BIRDS CASE REVIEW Adaptation of an IP is a sure source of revenue, and it's always fascinating to see how well it plays out with games. I am sure we all played "Angry Birds" by Rovio Entertainment and we may agree that the game remains one of the most successful franchises in the last decade. Although generating just $6 million and $75 million in 2010 and 2011 respectively, the game went on to generate an average of $150 million in yearly revenue from 2012 - 2016 and $250 million in yearly revenue from 2017 - 2022. It may interest you to note that Rovio was acquired by SEGA in August for about $700 million. The fascinating thing about this franchise is how they went all out to produce a movie animation for the game in 2016 (Angry Birds Movie), and then 2019 (Angry Birds Movie 2). This is genius, considering the fact that their revenue stream was high but they didn't limit the possibility of exploiting their economic rights in such a lucrative IP. Rovio Entertainment had to identify the specific studios to work with and eventually entered into a Production Partnership with Columbia Pictures (a member of the Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, a division of Sony Pictures Entertainment) And a Distribution Agreement with Sony Pictures. More interestingly, Angry Birds 2 (the game) remains the highest-grossing game in Rovio's portfolio. It hit a new milestone, surpassing $500 million in lifetime revenue as of February 2023, since its July 2015 launch. While game studios may have successfully built a captivating franchise for video games and players, it is not out of reach to explore other lucrative sources of revenue such as full adaptation of games into movies, and from movies, you can explore merchandise. The set-off has to be the percentage of royalty less agreed split with other Partners. This is something I truly believe can be replicated in Africa, to say the least, where the stream of revenue for game development studios is not limited to Ads and Publishing commission, but rather the culmination of every facet of our creative industry; movie, music, animation, sports, etc. I suppose one day, the African games industry will get there and I look forward to seeing how well the industry will be shaped in this regard. #games #gamesindustry #angrybirds #IntellectualProperty #technology #videogames

Ermmmm .... isn't the Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League a AAA live service game that sucked because of its bad live service experience? "Perrette said Warner wants to take a more "holistic approach" with its four core franchises—Mortal Kombat, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, and DC—with a particular focus on "expanding into the mobile and multi-platform free-to-play space, which could give us a much better and more consistent set of revenue." To that end, Warner has a number of free-to-play mobile games set to roll out later this year." Okay, but hey, wasn't SS:KtJL a AAA live service game that bombed? What lessons were learnt there? "Despite the growing exhaustion in some quarters with the live-service model, it also figures prominently in Warner's plans: "Rather than just launching a one-and-done console game, how do we develop a game around, for example, Hogwarts Legacy or Harry Potter, that is a live service, where people can come in and live and work and build and play in that world on an ongoing basis?" Nope, they learnt nothing. "Speaking at the recent Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, and Telecom Conference, Warner Bros Discovery executive JB Perrette said the company wants to expand more into free-to-play and live service games in order to avoid the "volatile" ups and downs of big-budget game releases." SS:KtJL is also strong graphically, with okay game play .... when it works, when you get in and doesn't crash on you) So WB is put off by the price tag of putting in AAA effort vs just putting in AAA money; and has a knee jerk reaction by putting their faith in Freemium, Pay2win, Microtransactions games with low cost, low risk - and probably very low quality of engagement. Now this is not a bad overall approach, Games Workshop used this approach to their portfolio of assets. And they had some good hits, AND many duds. And it is usually the AA games that make it.

The Walt Disney Company dropped a ton of announcements and the main focus was on the rebundling of sports content with what have always been their competitors - something myself and Mark Pannes and others have long believed was inevitable. I was much more interested in seeing the announcement of this investment in Epic Games to build new universes for their IP in the gaming world. I had previously presumed Electronic Arts (EA) could be a target as it makes Star Wars IP games and the sports franchise could be an interesting fit with ESPN and other sports rights its involved with. We are a part of the consumer industry and Sport / Media / Gaming are all part of this space. Finding ways to extend your IP into where people spend their time and money (go do some research on how big 'gaming' is) shows that despite the issues Iger faces he continues to try and reinvent the game even as the game is being changed around him. #sportsbiz #entertainment #gaming #investment https://lnkd.in/eXw8xrUP

Remedy Entertainment, the studio behind popular games like Alan Wake and Control, has confirmed that their 2016 title, Quantum Break, is not part of the Remedy Connected Universe (RCU). Although the game does "echo" into RCU projects, Remedy doesn't own the intellectual property rights for Quantum Break like they do for their other games. In a recent interview, creative director Sam Lake addressed a fan theory suggesting a connection between Alan Wake 2's Mr. Door and Quantum Break's Martin Hatch. While Lake clarified that Max Payne and Quantum Break are not part of the Remedy Connected Universe, he encouraged fans to come up with their own theories and enjoy the speculation. Remedy has previously discussed the concept of "echoes," where characters and events may indirectly influence future stories in a multiverse-like manner. This idea adds depth to the Remedy Connected Universe and allows for creative possibilities. On the brighter side, both the Alan Wake and Control franchises are firmly rooted in the Remedy Connected Universe. The AWE expansion, released in 2020, brought these two games together in an exciting crossover. Remedy is currently working on Alan Wake 2 and Control 2, alongside other projects. In addition, Remedy is bringing back the beloved Max Payne series with remakes of Max Payne and Max Payne 2 for modern platforms. Although not much information has been revealed since their initial announcements, fans can still anticipate the return of this iconic character to contemporary gaming. The Walt Disney Company announced a $1.5 billion investment into Epic Games, to expand the worlds of Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and Avatar by bringing them into the shoot’em up environment of Fortnite. In 2024 Gaming has become much more valuable than Movies. And Disney really has no presence in this space. Looks like they want to use the popularity of Fortnite to reach more Gen Z and Alpha audiences, to introduce and engage them with their franchise content and characters. - Will this partnership increase customer growth for their brand franchises? - Could it expand reach with younger audiences? - How will the younger family franchises blend into a shooting game?
