NIKE is stepping up its sustainability game! The sportswear giant has set new 2025 targets to accelerate its sustainability efforts, including aiming to purchase 100% of its energy from renewable sources. The company's 2023 Impact Report shows significant progress, with 96% of its energy already sourced from renewables in 2023, up from 48% in 2020. NIKE has also achieved a 73% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions since 2015, exceeding its 65% target. In addition, NIKE has diverted 100% of waste from landfills in its extended supply chain, with 80% recycled into NIKE products and other goods. To achieve these targets, NIKE is focusing on innovative initiatives such as scaling low-carbon materials, supporting suppliers' transition to renewable energy, and reducing air freight. Environmental Messaging: Are We Unintentionally Reinforcing Stereotypes? Just watched a video ad from the Adidas x Parley collaboration on climate change and pollution awareness. The message is powerful and vital – our planet needs our immediate attention. Yet, there's something worth discussing here. While the video's message resonates deeply, I couldn't help but notice the visual representation. The individual explaining the damage to our oceans was a person of a specific ethnicity, while those portrayed as change-makers and advocates for positive change were predominantly people of color, representing various ethnicities, with very few individuals of a different background. This visual representation raises important questions about environmental awareness campaigns. Are we unintentionally placing the burden and responsibility for change disproportionately on the shoulders of those who belong to developing countries or marginalized communities? Are we indirectly reinforcing the idea that the developing world is primarily responsible for pollution and in need of education? Climate change and pollution are global issues that require collective efforts from every corner of the world. It's imperative that we recognize that these challenges affect everyone, irrespective of their background. Environmental advocacy should not inadvertently perpetuate stereotypes or imply that certain groups bear more responsibility than others. This observation is not intended to point fingers, but rather to open up a thoughtful dialogue. Let's use this video as an opportunity to open up a discussion about how we frame these messages and ensure they reflect the complexity of the issue. the LEGO Group has now officially unveiled its Supplier Sustainability Programme, an initiative devised to drive down carbon emissions across its supply chain in recognition of the critical role that suppliers play in helping the Danish toymaker and brand owner achieve its robust sustainability targets. The company is committed to reducing its emissions by 37 percent by 2032 and achieving net-zero by 2050. To achieve this requires that its suppliers take significant steps to reduce their own emissions. Over 99 percent of the LEGO Group’s total carbon emissions come from outside its own operations, largely from suppliers that provide and deliver raw materials, machines, products, and services related to LEGO products. These are otherwise known as its Scope 3 emissions. Since yesterday was #EarthDay, why not post for the week about sustainability as #EarthWeek. Highlighting an innovative strategy in sustainability is adidas Adidas's Three Loop Strategy They breakdown their circular supply chain into three parts, a recycled loop, a circular loop and a regenerative loop. The recycled loop involves products that are made with recycled materials. The circular loop involves products made from remade products. The regenerative loop is for their products to me made from renewable resources and natural processes. Now, these may sound like just a focus on products, but there's real supply chain initiatives that can be made in these areas. It's not enough to have these sustainable materials making their products but their supply chain process must be sustainable as well. This involves making sure their procurement, production and manufacturing of the materials use clean energy, they themselves are energy efficient and ethically produced through their entire value chain just to list a few examples. This becomes a collaborative effort between the leadership, product development, supply chain and a host of stakeholders to ensure they are pushing towards their sustainability goals and meeting their standards. I think it's long pass that people think of sustainability or being "green" as just doing a singular function like our products are eco-friendly; companies need to truly look at their entire operations to truly live up to their ethos to be sustainable.
