Commercial and Securities Litigator with a Passion for Improving the Profession | JD, LLM in Securities Law | All views expressed are my own
Around the time that my LinkedIn presence had hit 1,000 followers, a very well-meaning senior mentor, who I respect immensely, was worried. They were worried that the industry would not see me as a “serious” litigator because I was doing something unconventional. They were worried that I would ruin my potential as a litigator by being too bold. They were worried that as a brown woman I could not afford to put myself out there in this way and it was going to hinder my legal career. I thought long and hard at that time about shutting down this presence because I love what I do and did not want to ruin my career. I am human and I was worried about what people would think. After a lot of reflection, I ultimately decided that I was going to keep writing on this platform. I felt it was important to create a dialogue and community around the issues we face as an industry and that maintaining the status quo was not serving us in making real progress. Since this decision, this community has grown to 5,000 followers. Yesterday I received the below message from a young racialised lawyer who I connected with through LinkedIn, as my writing resonated with her. I have been mentoring and guiding her for the past few years. This is why I keep doing this. This meant everything. #genderequity #mentorship #anekaadvice
What an inspiring journey! Your courage to push through doubts and continue sharing your insights is truly commendable. It's amazing to see how your efforts have resonated with so many people and created a supportive community. The story of the young lawyer you've mentored is heartwarming and a testament to the positive impact you're making. Keep being bold and authentic—you're making a real difference! 🌟
The advice you received was well-intentioned but totally misguided. Silence empowers and supports existing (biased) structures. Showing up authentically, as you do, tears them down.
So glad you kept going and couldn't agree more with this young lawyer!
Aneka Jiwaji I AM GLAD that you did not stop. For many of us, being able to use this platform in a way to voice things has added purpose and passion to our careers! Keep it up.
Let the haters hate and keep doing you Aneka, we're here for it!
I’m glad you kept writing.
Go you! 👏
So glad you kept at it!
