Temperature mapping of assets you work with every day is a great way to quickly check for elevated areas that may indicate issues. This unusual palette from FLIR makes the untrained eye see this Mill Quill as "red hot" however the spot termerature superimposed tells us the real story. When mentoring and training newcomers to using proactive tools like Thermography I start by talking about our skin temperature. Normally around 34-36c it's a way of thinking about our assets. At 39.3c this Quill is nothing to worry about, if I wanted more information I would be looking at the ambient temperature in this case it was up in the high 20s Historically I know that if I see this type of Mill Quill at or above 50c we're in for a deeper dive into what's going on... 💡Waddington’s lightbulb moment! Not all Planned Maintenance preserves our asset functions 🤔 CL Waddington recorded this 80 years ago during WW2 and published his findings in 1973. Yet many today still rely on Planned Maintenance Tasks that not only fail to target Failure Modes but harm our assets in the process 😐 He was already describing the negative impact of timed inspections decades prior to Nowlan and Heap with RCM Video clip from recent “Introduction to Condition Monitoring Workshop” for technicians, engineers, operators and managers. Heard of RCM? A lot of engineers still haven’t so that’s why I always share it during my training workshops. What about CH Waddington CBE from Operational Research during WW2? Here I’m sharing one of his findings, that intrusive planned maintenance can degrade a stable asset. Went to see bands last night 🧐 This small venue was rammed from 8 until 11pm 👏 Headliners here are ‘The Dirt Road Band’ a three piece. Ted Duggan (ex Badfinger) on Drums, Horace Panter (Specials) on bass and Steve Walwyn (Dr Feelgood) on guitars 🙌 Average age of band 69 years Average age of audience 65ish The band thanked us for coming out to support live music. Recent introduction from a “Condition Monitoring Workshop” with a new client. They were looking to give their engineers with different levels of knowledge an unbiased view of Condition Monitoring, this is what I can provide as I remain agnostic when it comes to hardware and devices. Day one was class based with lots of practical content… if you watch it to the end you will know why 😆 Day two on-site was spent with the Lubrication and Condition Monitoring techs looking at their assets, advising on lubrication control, explaining where ROI is most likely to be found, and finally a wrap up meeting with their Manitenance Process Manager.
