Last week we spoke about how we are on the verge of celebrating 60 years as an association 🥂
This week we thought it would be a good idea to look back to the beginning to where it all started 👏👏
It all began in 1962 when a Canadian Packaging Director was asked to visit the Interpack Show in Dusseldorf with the aim of searching out peer companies with manufacturing systems for the packaging industry.
In fact, Ed Maylem (Packaging Director at Rolph-Clark-Stone-Benallack Ltd) found another 8 like-minded family-run packaging companies.
One of these was Henry Steiger who had a packaging system called Servo. He was interested in putting together a group which could market and manufacture packaging systems ⤵️
These discussions led to the first meeting of 9 family-owned companies which took place in Berne 🇨🇭
Legal papers were drawn up and a second meeting was held in Edinburgh 🏴.
On 30th August 1963 a limited company was named and the INDEPENDENT PACKAGING GROUP LTD was founded ⤵️
In 1971 the limited company became an Association with 13 members and in 1998 it was renamed as the INTERNATIONAL PACKAGING GROUP.

You know when you go to an airport, how the luggage tag has an individual barcode on it, to tell the airline that the bag is YOURS? Well, we’re going to explain to you how that gets there … and how companies that use such technology could save money on their printing costs if they knew about Thermosil.
Firstly, those luggage tags are printed using thermal printing technology. They aren’t the only things. Shipping labels, items that have QR codes, healthcare and festival wristbands, parking garage tickets, barcodes, batch codes, sell-by dates … all these things use thermal printing technology.
Thermal printers are great – they’re efficient and can produce high-quality prints.
BUT – the paper they print them on isn’t ordinary paper. And it isn’t cheap.
Known as thermal substrate or thermal ribbon, this material needs to be uniform and flat as it is fed through a printer to achieve the precise clear print a barcode (as an example) would need. To do this, companies often use coated papers (think glossy or heavier paper-like material), which results in high levels of waste from trimming and ribbon usage (these things suffer from printing paper jams just like your printer at home!).
That expensive paper and those ribbon jams add up. Companies can either absorb the cost … or build it into their product/service prices which ultimately costs you, the customer.
This is where Thermosil comes into play, and why we think you should help us spread the word. This ink patch can be used with plain card/paper and a standard direct-thermal printer, and function just like the thermal ribbon used by companies but at a significantly reduced price.
In fact, Thermosil eliminates the need for thermal substrate/ribbon altogether. Instead, it can be used on various types of paper and synthetic film, seamlessly interacting with the printer. It also offers a wide range of colours, is water-resistant, and often provides superior printing quality compared to its alternatives.
By adopting this small little ink patch, companies can minimise the waste of thermally sensitive substrate stock and ribbon, which is also the sustainability we like to see companies strive for!
