Have you used Text to Columns in Excel? If you want to replicate that functionality in #Tableau, there’s an easy method! Tableau has a SPLIT function and guided dialogue box to help you split fields. Even if you’ve used SPLIT, I bet you don’t know how powerful it is! Did you know you can reference positive or negative token numbers? This is especially handy when the values in the fields you are splitting have an inconsistent number of columns. Want to see this in action? Dynamically change the start and end values of chart axes using parameters with the new Dynamic Axis Ranges feature in v2023.3 of Tableau. Do you know about Tableau’s ‘Sheet Description’? The ‘Ctrl + E’ shortcut will bring up Tableau’s Sheet Description feature. This feature gives you a breakdown of everything in the sheet which is particularly useful when reviewing a colleagues work for the first time or trying to understand how a downloaded resource was built. The Sheet Description gives you an overview in plain English before then breaking down the sheet in terms of: -           Marks -           Shelves -           Dimensions -           Measures -           Data Source Details #Tableau #Sheetdescription

When Tableau released version 2023.2 in June last year, they implemented the ability to customise individual line patterns. This makes it a lot easier to convey your insights to your end users where multiple trends exist within the same visualisation. #Tableau #LinePatterns

Day 44 of #dailyTableau Minor but a really important discovery for me: you can disable highlighting in Tableau! When I was first exposed to Tableau, it was confusing and a bit annoying how highlighting works. You press an area and the rest grey out by default and you don't know that you are supposed to press it twice to return to normal. It makes sense if the selection affects other worksheets at sight on the dashboard. But other than that, it will just confuse first-time Tableau dashboard users, especially with map. https://lnkd.in/g55V3PEQ

Someone asked me this evening how to start with #tableau - there so much to learn it’s a great question . I can be a bit scary sat in a #londontug seeing all this amazing work when you have just started out . My advise is work out what are you interested in outside side of work, I garentee there is probably some public data on it - #kaggle has loads of data - just download it and import it in to tableau and play . If that does not work for you download you bank statements into tableau and play . It’s data you understand and probably have an opinion on it . You will quickly start finding things to visualise and perhaps share . If its your bank statement it might even drive some action from you . Not only will you learn about visualisation you will learn how important it is to clean and organise you data . Introducing #tableaeuprep another tool to learn but something else just as perhaps more important to understand . I just learned by playing, there is loads of great content out there to support you plus the #datafam so just have fun !
