2024 will be a big year for geometry at CSAIL MIT/MIT EECS: We'll be organizing/hosting BOTH the Symposium on Geometry Processing (SGP) and Summer Geometry Initiative (SGI)! We are excited to bring geometry to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but it will come at substantial cost---so we need your help! Both are mainstays of the geometry processing community. SGP has been a top conference since its establishment in 2003. SGI is a 6-week research program for undergrads/MS students with a proven track record bringing a diverse new students into graduate programs in the field. In the coming year, I'll be leaning on *all* community members for help, from students to senior faculty. My goal is to use SGP+SGI to make geometry processing a model research community in terms of accessibility & inclusion. Plus it'll be the first year SGP is in North America! While it might be crass to beg for funding online, the most pressing matter is to raise funds for both as soon as possible! If you're in industry, please help me reach out to your company to be a sponsor for SGP, SGI, or both. If you have contacts, please share! Both have different models. SGP is a conventional conference. We could have events like: the Adobe Coffee Break, the Autodesk Reception, the Meta Banquet, the Dassault Systèmes Happy Hour, the Roblox Best Paper Award ... Just to name a few fictional events :-) SGI is a longer-term program bringing members into the community. Sponsors enable us to add students to the program, and they can participate as mentors or speakers---in addition to sharing swag with the Fellows! Plus, SGI students are a great pool for recruiting. I wonder what the varsity jackets will look like. Starting with a $100 million investment, Elon Musk is planning to start a primary and secondary school with a STEM-focused curriculum that will expand into a university in Austin, Texas. Tesla Elementary, SpaceX High and Elon U sound about right. America has a supply chain problem as in our inability to train future scientists or an economy capable of encouraging innovation. The U.S. has long fallen behind in science, technology, engineering and math to the point where we no longer produce the most science and engineering research publications, nor the most patents. Guess who does? That's China. The problem isn’t that the U.S. lacks the universities for technical education and degrees. Rather, the problem originates much earlier in our elementary and secondary schools. Math scores have been on the decline correlated with an increasing percentage of students below the basic level. While overall scores are discouraging, the percentage of Black and Hispanic students falling below basic in science and math is even higher. In other words, we're not preparing young people for future careers. Say what you will about Elon, but his focus on STEM at those levels makes plenty of educational sense. The U.S. education workforce pipeline foundation is on thin ice. While STEM jobs and degrees have steadily increased since 2000, the diversity of the workforce has not. While STEM jobs and degrees have risen, ensuring equitable access to quality STEM education for all students remains crucial. Closing the opportunity gap for Black, Hispanic, and female students is not just about economic competitiveness, but about fostering a diverse and talented STEM workforce that reflects our society. NEWS: The University of Michigan broke ground in December of 2023 on a $250 million research and education building in Detroit. Designed by KPF, the University of Michigan Center for Innovation (UMCI) will accommodate graduate programs in computer science, robotics, artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, financial technology, and sustainability. The 200,000-sf facility will also foster engagement with area residents by offering professional development classes, certificate courses, and workforce training opportunities. Featuring collaboration spaces for shared discovery with industry partners, the technology-rich structure will include flexible conference and event venues to promote knowledge exchange and the exploration of interdisciplinary synergies. Occupancy is expected in fall of 2026. The transformative project is part of a $1.5 billion initiative to reimagine The District Detroit as a dynamic live-work ecosystem where corporate and community interests coalesce to drive regional economic growth. UMCI is sited on 2.08 acres of land donated by Olympia Development Group, a subsidiary of Ilitch Holdings, and funded in part by a $100 million donation from @Stephen M. Design and Design Technology education should not be mirroring carpentry in my opinion is a misconception by many educators and adminstrators who are out there denying excellent Design educators an opportunity to teach design in a way it should ought to be: Bringing Math and Physics to Life With a Model Car Derby is an educational initiative that involves students in designing, testing, and building model cars as a way to engage with complex mathematical and scientific concepts This approach is used at Casco Bay High School in Portland, Maine, where teachers stage a model car race as the culminating event for an integrated math and physics project. The benefits of this approach include:Hands-on learning: Students actively engage with the subject matter by designing and building their model cars, allowing them to better understand and retain information . Real-world application: The model car derby provides a context for students to apply their knowledge of math and physics to a practical problem, making the learning experience more meaningful and relevant Collaboration and competition: Students work in teams to develop their car designs, fostering collaboration and friendly competition among peers Improved understanding of STEM concepts: By participating in the model car derby, students gain a deeper understanding of higher-level STEM concepts, such as weight, friction, and momentum Increased engagement and excitement: The model car derby creates an atmosphere of excitement and celebration, making learning more enjoyable and memorable for students https://lnkd.in/ek_pFX6V
