Senior Director of Regulatory and International Affairs

Last week AHIMA sent a letter to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra with American Academy of Family Physicians, American College of Physicians, American Medical Association, American Medical Group Association (AMGA), CHIME, and MGMA with recommendations on how to strengthen the nationwide health system in the wake of the Change Healthcare attack. While we work as a nation to rebound from the attack it is crucial we begin activities to ensure a similar attack does not disrupt healthcare at this level again. Our recommendations include: - Increasing resiliency in the health system through activities like a nationwide healthcare technology audit and ensuring there are multiple technology options for key activities where there is only one such option; - Continuing to focus on interoperability to ensure agile movement from one system to another if a system is unavailable for an extended period of time; - Increasing transparency throughout and after an attack; and - Continuing to support providers in the days, weeks, and months after an attack is resolved. A big thank you to Tara O'Donnell, Chelsea Arnone, Mari Savickis, Jeff Coughlin, Matt Reid, MS, Darryl Drevna, James Hayes, Nadia Daneshvar, Steven Waldren, and Mandi Neff for all your hard work in helping with the letter. THANK YOU, AHIMA! The trickle down impacts and extended impediments to healthcare delivery from a cyber-attack on electronic health information systems cannot be ignored. The Change Healthcare outage lasted > 4 weeks. AHIMA has built awareness on this issue and also is effective in providing solutions to survival in the during and after the cybersecurity penetration. Please keep up the good work... Vivian Thomas RHIA CHDA CHPS CPHQ CDIP CPHIMS California Dept of Public Health
