We had the opportunity to serve a prison inmate patient at Genesis recently. I can't share any detail about this person (obviously), but it struck me that, years ago, this would've been the type of opportunity Genesis would've known intellectually is the right thing to do, and would have done, had the opportunity presented itself. What was different about this instance is that the facility sought us out, knowing our compassionate providers and staff would willingly care for this patient, as they would anyone else. And that our staff wouldn't balk about the state-mandated logistics of handling an inmate, who was required to stay in handcuffs with officers at their side. I'm so proud that we've created the type of organization that can see patients from all walks of life, to ensure that care is delivered no matter what a patient's circumstances are. And also an organization that is sought out to care for those on the margins. This is why we exist.

I'm part of another Kairos prison ministry and we'll be going in April 11-14. Many people will never get the opportunity of serving in a prison. If you'd like to be part of this effort, there are two main ways you can participate. First, we need prayer warriors to cover the weekend in prayer. Basically, if you are willing to commit to praying one or more times during the weekend (4pm Thursday through 4pm Sunday), please email me at dr.eric.dent@gmail.com. The brothers in blue get blown away when they find out total strangers to them are praying for them. Secondly, you can provide a meal for them for $10. We bring in outside food and we see grown men tear up when the eat a Big Mac for the first time in 20 years. Your first name (not last name) will be on a meal ticket they receive, so they will know it came from you (again, not your last name). We see them clutch these meal tickets like cherished possessions. If you can provide more than one meal, think about supporting one inmate's meals for the weekend ($90) or a table of inmates for a meal ($60). Checks and other payment methods are made out to Kairos, and if you email me how you'd like to transfer the money, I'll respond with the details. Thanks for helping transform the lives of so many people who may have lived their entire lives receiving no gestures of unconditional love.

Did you know..💡 As of 2019, Corrections Service Canada reports the following cost of incarceration: ➡️ $330/day/male inmate ➡️ $120,589 year/male inmate ➡️ $585 day/female inmate (2015) ➡️ $204,474 year/female inmate Even with incarceration being costly, we know that people are not incarcerated forever. They eventually get released, often times with no rehabilitation, or skills to navigate system, often resulting in a vicious cycle of recidivism and further victimization. This can also lead to an increased safety risk to the community. Investing in programs such as Drug Treatment Court, costs society approximately $32,000/ year. This is far less costly, aids in rehabilitating those high risk high needs individuals, in turn, creating safer communities, community restoration, and preventing further victimization. #drugtreatmentcourt #alberta #corrections #investincommunityprograms #community #safercommunities #prevention #crimeprevention #crime #communityimpact #communityengagement #addictions #recovery #recoveryispossible #addictiontreatment #risk #riskmanagement

Rehabilitation programs that focus on the wellbeing of inmates have been shown to be more effective in reducing recidivism rates. In addition to maintaining contact with friends and family, providing inmates with opportunities for personal growth and skill development can greatly impact their successful reintegration into society upon release. PixNow's innovative approach of providing physical photos in real time can help inmates feel connected to their loved ones and provide them with a sense of normalcy and support during their time incarcerated. This type of contact can boost morale and motivation, leading to better outcomes for inmates both during their time in prison and after their release. https://lnkd.in/gsfjw4BY

WE WON THE CONTRACT! We couldn't wait to tell you so we asked you to be on the lookout for this announcement! Friends Outside was the successful bidder to provide Visitor Center Services at all 32 prisons across the state of California for the next three years. This renewal makes more than 20 years of Friends Outside running Visitor Centers. This service is funded by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation under a legislative mandate and California Penal Code (PC) Section 6351 using Inmate Support Funds. The primary purpose of the Visitor Centers is to remove barriers and facilitate family visiting. Friends Outside staff provide a welcoming environment that encourages successful family visits and supports eventual family and community unification. Visits provide a way for a family to stay connected. Incarcerated parents have the opportunity to support the parent/child relationship, and children get to maintain the needed contact with their mother or father. Centers are located outside the prison walls but on prison grounds, and usually adjacent to the visitor parking lot. They are open during regularly scheduled weekend visiting hours and on designated holidays. The services in this contract renewal have changed slightly. Visitor Centers offer: - A place to rest and wait after a long trip from their home to prison - Children’s activities while waiting for the visit - Child supervision for up to 20 minutes while parents prepare for their visit - Emergency clothing to borrow where clothing worn is in violation - Transportation to the prison from bus or train stations and more - Resources and referrals when the visitor is in need - Help understanding visiting rules and regulations for this and future visits Friends Outside is proud to be a part of the visitation process. Literally thousands of visits have been saved because the Visitor Centers are there! Visitor Center services are just one type of service we offer. If you see our work as important and want to help us do more, please make a donation toward the mission of Friends Outside.

New REAL ID Laws Create Uncertain Path Home for Released Inmates Leaving New Jersey As the REAL ID enforcement deadline looms, concerns are growing for individuals released from prison in New Jersey who don't reside in the state. These individuals might face significant hurdles returning home due to travel restrictions imposed by the new law. REAL ID, implemented nationwide in 2020, requires specific documentation for federal identification purposes, including boarding domestic flights and entering certain federal buildings. While New Jersey is compliant, many states where inmates may reside are not. This creates a conundrum for those released without valid REAL ID-compliant identification or the means to obtain it. Difficulty returning home can significantly hamper an individual's reintegration into society. Access to employment, housing, and family support becomes more challenging, potentially increasing the risk of recidivism. https://lnkd.in/edYdDMFA

Upon leaving prison, individuals should be afforded a fresh start; however, for many returning citizens, this transition introduces a myriad of new obstacles. The reintegration process can be daunting for numerous reasons, leading a significant portion of individuals to reoffend and return to incarceration. Despite ongoing efforts in prison reform, the recidivism rate in the United States remains alarmingly high at 70% within 5 years of release. It is imperative to enhance rehabilitation programs and support systems to break this cycle and facilitate successful reentry into society. https://lnkd.in/eJib53aN

From prison to Princess How the story of the peacock chair continues to reappear in furniture history When you see someone you care about grow from creating you realize how valuable it is; not because they get money for their creation; but because the creating gave them a chance to physically create. Why don’t people see the value of inmates creating; everytime I suggest this historic revival people get angry because they think I want to profit and exploit prisoners. I don’t even understand that. I don’t make things to make money; I make because it’s fun; so the real issue is; don’t allow fun and enjoyment because it would be rewarding the inmates for their crime; but no one ever says that; they always say I’m trying to get something from the prisoners; the situation is scary why would I want that; it’s about creating a new path of thought through making and creating peacock chairs with rattan; What are the chances Jokowi would allow it?

The recidivism rate of life prisoners is lower than the average of all prison inmates. Since 1980, a total of 73 life prisoners have been released, and 16 of them have returned to prison by the end of 2009. The renewal rate is 21.9%. First THIS DOESN'T MEAN NOTHING! 16 people can returned by killing 3000 people or by killing 0 people ... A new homicide was committed by four people Second: those who are still doing crimes without getting in prison? https://buff.ly/4bUPt2j Even related to homicides Det er 29 drap i Norge politiet ikke har klart å oppklare. Så lenge en drapsmann går løs får ikke de pårørende ro. There are 29 murders in Norway that the police have not been able to solve. As long as a murderer is on the loose, the next of kin will not rest https://buff.ly/437zgTj Third, most important: WHAT WAS THE REASON FOR THIS LIFE SENTENCE?! means bullshit or something seriously? https://buff.ly/49FNHA4 which type of homicide? https://buff.ly/4bSxU30 Vuosina 1970 - 2011 Suomessa ei ole määrätty elinkautista vankeutta muista kuin murhista. In the years 1970 - 2011, life imprisonment has not been imposed in Finland for crimes other than murder. The recidivism rate for prison inmates during the five- year follow-up per…

Corrections is a challenging profession. A successful facility operation is like a good marriage; it's all about compromise. It's about management and line staff working toward the same goals. This can only be accomplished through good communication and respect for each other. However, respect on both sides has to be earned and not given because of the title a person holds. Questions need to be asked, and opinions need to be heard. When that is accomplished, the decision made will generally be accepted. I believe it's OK to ask questions and get opinions from the inmate population. After all, they are the reason we are there. Innovation is also essential in a prison operation. The way I view innovation is if a new idea doesn't cause staff or inmates to get hurt, break the budget, or cause an escape, the only other thing that can be damaged is your pride, and that will heal. The point is that it takes everyone in a facility to be involved in creating success. With it, success may be easier to obtain.
