Francesco Δημήτριος Foti: "The EU Council's approval of Ukraine's accession talks, amid challenges with Hungary and US aid, raises questions about Ukraine's journey to full EU membership. The 2023 Commission Report underscores progress and challenges, emphasizing ongoing support for Ukraine post-war and the necessity of institutional changes for EU membership." #europeanunion #ukraine #politics #eu #geopolitics https://lnkd.in/ej8zbWBu

Europe is stronger together! The European Union is one step closer to opening its doors to new members. We have been vocal advocates for a more ambitious EU enlargement policy. We support recommendations to begin accession talks with Ukraine, Moldova, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, grant candidate status to Georgia, and provide new opportunities to Western Balkan countries. However, this enlargement must be guided by merit. Peace, cooperation and solidarity, democracy and rule of law must be respected. Moreover, it is now clear that we need internal EU reforms, to ensure that EU institutions and the decision-making processes are prepared for an enlarged "family" of more than 30 member states.

Completing our Union is the call of history. It also has a strong economic and geopolitical logic. Ukrainians are deeply reforming their country and preparing for accession, even as they are fighting an existential war. Moldova has undertaken significant reforms, despite constant destabilisation efforts against its democracy. Today, the European Commission has recommended that the Council opens accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova. Finally, we recommend to grant candidate status to Georgia on the understanding that the government takes important reform steps. Past enlargements have shown enormous benefits both for the accession countries and the EU. Basically, we all win. Read more in my statement on the 2023 Enlargement Package: europa.eu/!8Gg7mb

This week holds significant importance within the context of the EU Enlargement for both Moldova and Ukraine. Moldova, has demonstrated positive momentum across all nine areas outlined in the EC recommendations since June 2022. ✅ It is crucial for the EU Parliament, EU Commission, and all EU member states to lend their support to initiate EU accession negotiations. Some experts advocate for joint negotiations (Ukraine and Moldova coming ‘in package’), citing the regional nature of the process. However, others argue for a differentiated approach, especially in light of opposition from Orban against Ukraine and ensuring that Moldova does not lose its EU path given the ongoing attempts for destabilisation by Kremlin. It remains uncertain whether Orban's stance extends to Moldova, given his close ties with the Kremlin. ✅ The broader question is whether other EU states will rally behind the democratic aspirations of both Moldova and Ukraine, or if potential challenges, including political dynamics, will hinder a united front. The decision holds implications for the region's overall progress toward EU integration. ❓ What's your take on this matter?! #moldovaeuaccessionnegotiations #Moldova4EU #MoldovaEUIntegration
