We must not fall for COP29 Azerbaijan plans to start a $500mn fund with the money of #fossilfuel industry to fund the energy transition - This fund is a charade to distract us from the oil and gas industries deadly unwillingness to transition. Lets unpack: 1️⃣ $500mn constitute around 0.025% of last years clean energy investment ($1.8tn), a drop in the ocean - especially if you consider funds tend to only spend a fraction of their money per year. 2️⃣ This is a commercial fund. To make a difference the fund would need to provide highly concessional finance and grants to countries with limited fiscal space and high cost of capital - lets not confuse money-making with charity. 3️⃣ Any countries and national companies that plan to expand fossil fuels like Azerbaijans SOCAR Downstream are using this as a distraction from their deadly unwillingness to transition
Nothing captures the lack of seriousness of the world about climate change better than two consecutive COPs run by major oil producers. And this one is effectively a Russian client state. It’s like the nations of the world are suffering from Stockholm syndrome — we’ve been been kidnapped and held hostage by the oil companies for so long that we’re thrilled when they untie us once a year to give us an ounce of water to drink. I look forward to the day when we actually take our blindfolds off.
Here’s an idea, Andreas Sieber : Put a $60/bbl price cap on all oil sold on Earth and scrap fossil fuel subsidies. Fossil fuel investors will ditch fossil fuel projects and so will every fossil fuel company shareholder. We’re wasting time.
In this interview I did with an Azerbaijan news outlet, I comment about the growing influence of the petro industry at the COPs. (last question) For me, this emerged strongly in Glasgow. It is the same old game, but in a different arena. https://news.az/news/interview-cop29-to-focus-on-emissions-mitigation,-climate-finance
Chump change, even if it actually does something.
