LMAO!! 🤣🤣🤣 I laugh in katangwa Auntie be calming down now, the fact that you planned that family celebration doesn't mean that you can start planning every other event. And yes it might be a signal that you should consider event planning, Understand that these things have processes, rules and everything that is needed for you to succeed in that field. Make your deep research not shallow ohhh, deep one. Meet people doing these things be sure that you are ready and you have all that it takes. Be sure of whatever skill you want to go into, if you want to build a brand that people can trust. Thanks to Rob Norman and Digiday, I needed a laugh today and this post got me all nostalgic. I honestly haven't kept track of how many digital events I've spoken at around the world. My roles in hosting, producing, or serving on content and editorial boards have led to some interesting experiences, to say the least. Much to the chagrin of older and wiser Kevin, slightly younger Kevin always approached a speaking invitation with value first, self interest a distant second. The event organizers seemed to think similarly for a time, seeking out people who could shuffle the corporate coil and add value. Then one day -- and I remember this distinctly-- I was speaking at an event in DC and realized I was the only one who hadn't paid to be on the panel. While the formulaic approach (speaker company, speaker company) has taken longer to rot in the sun, the decline of quality content and its relationship to undisclosed (or disclosed) financial relationships shouldn't surprise anyone. So here's my handy dandy -- no longer any skin in the game-- guide to attending events. When an event stops inviting people who can (and enjoy) calling bullspit, find another one. When you go and feel as though you and your time have been sold to the highest bidder, find another one. When an event "asset" is sold to another company seeking to "monetize it" better, said effort is 100% guaranteed to disgorge the event's soul, so find another one. When you look around and see the same people talking about the same things, who all paid the same amount "for the honor of being invited, " who are all beholden to the same people, you should probably... I'm attending and speaking at far fewer events these days. When I do, I'll post about it and let you know. TALK IS NOT CHEAP!! As against popular opinion, being an emcee isn't 90% dependent on possessing the gift of garb. While I can agree that that is a fundamental part of becoming a Speaker/Moderator/Emcee, there are other attributes that account for becoming stellar besides being able to speak. This is why when looking out to hire a Master of Ceremonies (MC), it is essential to consider several important qualities to ensure a successful event. I've always opined that your event is heavily influenced and dictated by the persona and character of the Emcee or Host. As someone looking forward to hiring a Master of Ceremonies for your event, here are five qualities to watch out for; • Look for an MC who exudes professionalism in their demeanor, appearance, and communication. They should have excellent interpersonal skills, be reliable, and have a track record of punctuality and preparedness. • A great MC should be engaging, charismatic, and have the ability to command attention and connect with the audience. They should be able to create a lively and energetic atmosphere during the event. • Effective communication is crucial for an MC, as they are responsible for guiding the event and interacting with the audience, speakers, and other participants. Look for an MC who has exceptional speaking and listening skills, can articulate clearly, and can adapt their communication style to different situations. • Events may encounter unexpected changes or challenges, and the MC should be adaptable enough to handle these situations smoothly. They should be quick thinkers who can improvise, maintain composure under pressure, and adjust the program as needed without causing disruptions. • Depending on the nature of the event, it may be important for the MC to have knowledge or expertise in a particular field. Look for someone who is willing to research and understand the event's purpose, theme, or industry to ensure they can provide relevant and insightful commentary. Remember to conduct interviews, seek recommendations, or review the MC's previous work to gauge if they possess these qualities and align with the specific requirements of your event. Morning Linkedin, I attended the rec expo the other day and I was struck by the realisation that quite a few people may think I am a d*ck on LinkedIn because of my rhetoric(well actually I was told this by a few people) This has led me to want to clarify a few things. I am a d*ck on LinkedIn to the people who seek to force our industry into negative territory I am a d*ck on linked in to competitors who are happy to rip off/steal from innocent contractors I am a d*ck to people on LinkedIn who lie/talk sh*t about me or my company or other good people in the industry. I am not a d*ck to competitors who turn up and try to make this industry a better place. My motivations are very clear. I turn up to work to work hard and improve my industry each day. I am not everyone's cup of tea and frankly I am ok with that. I am happy to work alongside competitors and other bodies if they have the same motivations. My event hosting journey is worth sharing about. There were times I based my emcee abilities on the compliments I got after anchoring a particular event. If the 'well done and keep it up' I got are much,I will conclude the performance was superb and vice versa. Those were the days of little beginnings. However,I have polished my skills and worked on my confidence over the years. I now base my output on how comfortable the audience is and how enjoyable the event is. There's no crowd I cower before these days. I only need to get my acts together ahead of time. Skills are meant to be upgraded. A wise man once said,"It is okay to start small but it is unwise to remain so." The Scripture admonished that the diligent will stand before kings and people that matter. My advice to you; 🔶 keep getting better 🔶don't stay where you started from 🔶upskill when necessary 🔶 add finesse to what you do. Your uplifting is here. Many years ago, I was invited to co-host a state event. It was my first time to stand before governors. I came very early to be briefed. My co-host was much more experienced. He came in just before the program began. We were jointly briefed. Somewhere along the line, there was a costly mix up. I was called to be a witness if the briefing was not properly done. I found it difficult to take sides. I however learnt an important lesson: never assume that because you were good at your last outing, you will be good in your next outing. Always come prepared. Be punctual. Share notes with the organizers; any thing could have changed within hours. Ask many questions. All these can be done if one comes early. Recruiters prefer someone who is available even though not the best than the best that is not available or reliable. By the way, even if it is a pro bono service, put in your very best, come early. One of the most remarkable events I have ever done was pro bono: The deeper Life High School Valedictory Service of 2019! It is evergreen.
