In this era with the urgent need for all companies to focus on sustainability, for many it’s hard to find the delicate balance between clearly showing their sustainability efforts vs. being perceived as ‘green washer’ when over-doing it or not living-up to certain claims.
In case of being too cautious, companies are missing opportunities to invite customers to join their purposeful mission or guiding consumers to make the conscious choice in for instance product assortment or delivery options. On the other hand, reputational risks are just around the corner for companies that artificially try to cover the gap that exist between their operational issues and their green and social intent that is being communicated.
If you have a role in which you need to figure out how to deal with this paradox, our upcoming Senior Executive Roundtable (September 8) will be THE place to openly share your thoughts and challenges with your peers and hear-back how they are dealing with that.
Some key discussion topics will be:
- How to effectively communicate the value of your sustainable practices to customers and prevent reputational loss?
- Which business models enable the ‘conscious consumer’?
- What could be practical initiatives to offer to the conscious consumer in every step of the customer journey/lifecycle?
In previous Sustainability roundtables we had a good cross-industry representation, that gave interesting different viewpoints, from companies like Coca-Cola, Maxeda, Randstad, Transavia, VTTI, Athlon, Nutreco, JLL, Equans and Renewi.

Sustainability is a sector-spanning disruptive force. Traditional businesses run on the premise that sustainability and corporate social responsibility are important, but only after commercial value is ensured. New disruptive organizations employing sustainable business models are thriving, treating sustainability and profitability as an equal priority.
