Every single day, I wake up thinking on ways we can improve our public transportation in Nairobi and Kenya at large. I feel for everyone who depends on our current public transportation for their mobility needs. This is not to trash the work being done by the matatu, bodaboda and tuktuk sub-sectors. But truth be told, we can do better. The matatu sector employs thousands of people both directly and indirectly. However, the employment is casual, uncertain and lacking basic social protection. The job comes with a lot of risk from police harassment to death on the road because of accidents. Everyday, a matatu driver and conductor wakes up to go to work, they are uncertain if they will go back home safe, with pay or they may end up in jail or dead. We can do better. The sector is estimated to be worth more than 100 billion in capital investments. Much of this investment is held by individual investors. Management and ownership of matatus is on an individual level. Even the legal framework governing the sector has entrenched individual ownership and management. This makes the more than 100 billion investment waste away and has little impact on the economy. How about we relooked at the legal framework and the business model, and how we deploy capital in the sector? How about if we demanded better structures of management in the PSV Saccos/Companies? The National Public Transport Alliance (NAPTA) is dedicated to building the capacity of the matatu sector to provide better transportation services to passengers and make the sector an enabler of the economy at the grassroots. At some point I was a hotcake attending distasteful interviews which I used as an opportunity to understudy companies in Ghana and their practices which inhibits their growth or contribute to a generational society of corruption, lack of accountability, and all the negative vices that characterises this locale. I call them distasteful interviews because I'm a semi-introvert and do not appreciate much of open places (occasions), meeting new faces or visiting some companies to be asked questions which a simple survey, audio or video call could solve if JUST curious about me and not ready to employ.I will tell you more on the feedback from my study but remember, fix the corporate inefficiencies and unemployment could be halved without a need of planting new seed.Where are the humane corporate laws?
