🤖NEW PIECE. How AI-generated disinformation might impact this year’s elections and how journalists should report on it.
In a new article, our colleague Marina Adami looks at the current state of AI-generated disinformation, particularly deepfakes, and its potential impact on elections worldwide. The piece is based on conversations with journalists and experts from Spain, Mexico and India. They brought perspectives on how deepfakes work and how they fit into the context of different countries’ political and media landscapes.
🤡 AI for satire. How are political deepfakes created? Is the goal always to disinform? A member of the Spanish collective United Unknown, who uses AI tools for satire, explained how the group works and how they try to prevent people from mistaking their images as real. “The responsibility always lies with the author-creator-ideologist, not with the technology used,” he said.
🗳️ AI as a campaign tool. Despite a few high-profile examples, deepfakes are yet to make a strong impact in a real-world political context. But many things could change as this technology evolves. “I still feel that the use of AI in Indian elections is at a very nascent stage,” said Indian journalist Srishti Jaswal, who is a Pulitzer Center 2023 AI Accountability Fellow.
