It takes a scorecard to keep track of the movers and shakers in the open RAN RIC (RAN Intelligent Controller) ecosystem, so here’s a cheat sheet from my latest report, ”Self-Organizing Networks and RAN Intelligent Control – 2024.” The research surveyed 16 vendors and included additional partners where mentioned. We noted that the number of operator engagements in the RIC ecosystem has doubled from last year, which is a prelude to commercial deployments. VMware remains the leading RIC platform vendor with the most 3rd party app vendors signed on board, but the Ericsson Intelligent Automation Platform has made impressive gains since last year. ++ NTT DOCOMO Partners with Ooredoo Group, #Smart, and StarHub for Open RAN Field Trials ++ NTT DOCOMO, INC. announced that it has reached agreements with Ooredoo Q.P.S.C. (Ooredoo), Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) and StarHub Limited (StarHub) to conduct field trials aimed at accelerating the global adoption of mobile networks built on Open RAN architecture, which will help to eliminate global communication gaps by enabling open, interoperable interfaces and virtualization. Ooredoo, with the aim of future adoption of Open RAN in Middle East, will partner this year with DOCOMO to conduct a verification test that simulates the in house operation of a commercial Open RAN. #DeutscheTelekom (#DT), in collaboration with #AirHop, #JuniperNetworks, #VIAVI Solutions, and #VMware, recently conducted a trial of Non-Real-Time RAN Intelligent Controller (#RIC) technology based on #OpenRAN specs. Trial was based upon the following components from different vendors: 📌 Deutsche Telekom provided a self-developed SMO framework along with a Non-RT RIC solution based on the O-RAN SC Non-RT RIC 📌 Juniper Networks and VMware integrated their non-RT RIC products into DT’s SMO framework 📌 AirHop integrated two rApps for PCI optimization and AI/ML-based Energy Savings with each Non-RT RIC 📌 VIAVI provided their RIC tester to emulate the O1 interface This multi-vendor trial signifies our commitment to advancing #ORAN tech and exploring the potential of Non-RT RIC and #rApp concepts in optimizing disaggregated RAN. During the trial, they successfully completed a RAN closed-loop optimization proof of concept at their lab, using #ONAP and #OpenRAN specifications. Closed-loop rApp algorithms were deployed on their partners' Non-RT RIC. This endeavour resulted in two remarkable use cases: ✔️ PCI Optimisation: Addressing #PCI confusion and collision scenarios. ✔️ ESMC (#EnergySavings Multi-Carrier Management): Utilizing AI and machine learning to optimize sleep-mode for energy efficiency without compromising quality. This proof of concept demonstrated the promise of #SMO, Non-RT RIC, and rApp framework.
